Halloa,

I am currently teaching english in Korea and thinking of making a permanent move to china, I heard Yunnan Province is cool. Any advice on what schools I could contact?

Any other helpful information welcome.

Hi, yes Yunnan province is cool and Kunming is a cool city===I was there in 2002, looking for work--It was possible to find work but you would struggle at the Universities and langauge centres to make 3000RMB a month. In addition to htis there wasn't exactly a lack of foreigners, a lot of them French for some reason, wandering about asking after ESL jobs. I doubt you will set up a job on the net for that province, I recmnd u plan a holiday there--check out the work scene, but don't expect too much.

Apart from (overrun) Kunming you can try your luck in Xiaguan near Dali and Jinghong in Xishuangbanna in the deep (and tropical) south next to the Laotian border.

In Xiaguan you will be one among many competitors, though!

And in Jinghom you might feel a tad...bored because the town is small and heavily touristed but otherwise devoid of attractions. The climate also is different (subtropical).

As an alternative I suggest you try Guizhou province which is on the east side of Yunnan and also has a pleasant climate.

I've been living and working in Kunming for three years. It is a great place, but the others are right about pay being lower than the rest of the country and foreigners being plentiful (although pay is rising somewhat and you shouldn't get stuck with those 3000RMB a month jobs anymore. It seems fairly easy for experienced teachers to pull in between 4-5000 a month her now, although anything more would be pushing it). Indeed, Klaus, it says something about me that at 23 I wanted to go and live in Kunming, despite the low wages--the wages were so low, however, I had to go to Shanghai and make some money.

exactly. so that makes you 27 with i am quite certain no formal qualifications in linguistics and mouthing off with "experience" garnered working for local english langauge schools of the performing monkey variety or local uni "oral english" type classes . my formal english language teaching experience goes back to a time when you were barely in high school and i've certainly never had to suffer the ignominy of working for local concerns or that of having to live in a dump like shanghai...not that there's anything wrong with that...

exuberant but blissfully ignorant youth is never any match for age and experience.

you seem to at least have a modicum of intelligence though...give yourself a chance to listen and you might just learn something

--Linguistics is your field--not mine--and I readily bow to your knowledge on that one subject--however, that-and the fact you may be older than me does not excuse your high and mighty tone; but I'll forgive u as I know it is but a condition of your in-built defence mechanism.

I have taught A level and IB English Lit at a very well known international school in S Am, and shock horror I studied Lit at Uni--do I insult you for not having done so? Am I a capable ESL teacher? Is it impossible that since 2002 I have passed certain 'linguistic' exams?

Shanghai maybe a dump in your opinion, well then the whole 21st century may be a bum rap for u mate. That aside, I still enjoy your posts. One question remains however, where exactly are u working these days?
