I'm not so sure the state sector isn't being manipulated for similar reasons that Dr. John is stuffing his staff in the aforementioned post. State or otherwise, the bottom line is usually that everyone is out for what they can get.
On the less cynical side, let's face it, a worker is worth his/her keep. A good teacher is worth paying more than a bad one. You would hope that commercialisation of education would enable the dross to be gleaned off. While this may be true in other arts such as dance, music, drama etc, EFL has not yet matured enough as a discipline to provide such kudos for those who are masters at their craft. Perhaps one day commercialisation will do for this field what patrons like the Medicis did for artists in Rennaisance Florence - paying them enough to do what they were gifted at.
Then again, maybe I'm just a dreamer...  |
