Hey all,
I was planning on going home for the Christmas break seeing as it has been three years since I have had the opportunity and I was wondering if everyone uses the internet to book their flights home, if they know of any good sights and any suggestions. I would be flying out of Huatulco to Winnipeg, Canada and when I look online, all I am finding are flights that will take me two days there and two days back...far more travelling than I expected. Cool

I usually go to the airline's website and book directly, paying with credit card.

I recently flew Mexicana from Mexico City to Vancouver for around 8,000 pesos. I am flying my family of four from Toluca to Cancun for Christmas vacation for less than 12,000 pesos total. All booked online.

Try the Mexicana website. Travel agencies are obviously going to charge you their percentage.

That's a good price. Flight prices internally are really coming down. I flew NovaAir for the 15th holiday fairly cheap, and found flights from DF to Cancun at 850 pesos one way with Aviacsa, all online too.

Hmmm. I'm not sure I can agree with the Mexicana.com recommendation... I used the Mexicana web site to book a flight for Christmas time on Saturday afternoon. Shortly after that I received an automated email saying "payment was in process", and that I'd receive another email when the flight was confirmed.

I still haven't heard further as of today (Wednesday), so I phoned Mexicana this morning and asked if my flight was confirmed. The attendant said yes, and that I should be receiving a confirmation email shortly. That was 7 hours ago, but I haven't heard anything more.

I just checked with my bank and my credit card hasn't been charged yet, so I'm not sure if I really have a ticket or not. Any other airline I've booked a ticket with has sent a confirmation within 24 hours. It seems a little wacky to me. I'm guessing the paperwork has been held up somewhere, but it's been three business days, not including Sunday.

here are sites i check every time i fly, which happens way too often and i can't believe you would look anywhere BUT the internet for plane tickets. i have never found cheaper rates on the airline pages than the cheapest flight i find from using:
sidestep.com
orbitz.com
travelocity.com
expedia.com

flying out of mexico, give both mexican airlines a big miss. insanely long departure lines from mexico city, whereas with the foreign airlines you usually wait anywhere from 0 to 10 minutes. seriously, you can easily spend 3 hours in line for a mexicana flight.

secondly, on pretty much every international flight i've been on there are idiots who don't know how to match the number on their ticket to the number on the seat. i've been moved to first class 3 times because the american stewardesses usually feel bad about making you stand in the aisle while they unravel the chain of wrong seats. i'm not saying the mexican stewardesses don't care, but their attitude seems to be more like "just find an empty seat somewhere nearby. oh, and that doesn't include first class."

I think that's more for going to the US where security checks are tighter? I flew Mexicana to Toronto direct on a full flight and was through the line in no time.

There are several other Mexican airlines now, though most won't fly very far into the US...LA, Dallas, Vega, Miami, and I think that's about it for the smaller lines.

I'm told it's become much simpler when traveling to Europe on direct flights bypassing the US, but I don't have the direct experience.

Now, getting to Winnipeg...there's the kicker. Maybe continental to Chicago and Chicago to Winnipeg?

Cheaper isn't always better. If I book a ticket through one of the non-airline sites, I can save 25% or more - but I end up with a ticket that stops twice between here and YVR - and usually has an overnight stay somewhere due to lousy connections. (And most of the flights go through LAX - an airport I absolutely detest. The line-ups in LAX at Christmas time.... Sad ) Also, the cheaper tickets usually require an airline switch, meaning no e-ticket, so I have to pay a few bucks more for the ticket supplier to courier me a ticket.

If I buy a ticket directly from the airline, I pay more - but the ticket tends to have fewer stops and better connections. When I factor in the time saved and the lack of overnight stops, I'm okay with spending the extra bucks.

Shanny,

Signature Vacations (www.signaturevacations.com) runs a direct flight from Winnipeg to Huatulco (about a 6.5 hour flight). Try contacting them to see if they would sell you a Huatulco-Winnipeg return ticket.

Buena Suerte...

Unfortunately, the charter companies usually won't sell you a ticket unless you orignate from their home country.

That's true, especially of the Canadian charter flights. The Government approves those rules and they are very strict. Charters are almost always for one and two week round-trip vacations, out of Canada. There is a charter company out of Minnesota that seems to sell one way tickets (Sun Country??), but this won't happen with Canadian charters.

I have been checking the cheap sites, but they get me there the next day...that's just crazy. I was checking out Continental but it cost me $1000 just for the way there...even though I put in round trip. Are there any other options?

Yep. I have the same problem. I can fly from HUX to YVR for $1000 round-trip, but I have to overnight somewhere. If you don't want the hassle, you can book a faster, more direct ticket through Mexicana's web-site, but it'll cost you an extra 30% or more.

hi there...I'm new to this forum and thought I'd just jump right in and give my 2 cents as in a few weeks it will be my 3rd trip Winnipeg-Mexico this year. I work with a travel agent, but I always check out orbitz.com to see what cheap flights they advertize, then tell my agent and she works it out for me, always getting a great price. In April, I flew Wpg - Pto Escondido and it's a bit tricky and longer from that coastline...had to go via Toronto o/n, there and back. This time going to Cancun, I found an all-in-one-day flight via Minneapolis-Miami...through NW and AA. And I found it on orbitz.com-whereas my agent's screen didn't. And it's only costing me $673 Cdn. return, which is a bonus! Don't know if this helps...good luck! Smile
