All good ones, TK4.
"Hotaru no Haka" is Studio Ghibli, but not one Miyazaki directed, I think. I own that one, though. A classic anime film. I like Ghibli stuff, but true anime classics like "Akira" and "Ghost in the Shell" are worth a big recommendation here.

Great Samurai film: "Yojimbo" by Kurosawa. Mifune's Sanjuro is rivaled only by Katsu Shintaro's Zatoichi.

Why all the Japanese or SE Asian movies?

Why not? Do you find subtitles hard to read?

In the book recommendation thread the subject turned to Dogs and Demons and Alex Kerr's analysis of all that is wrong with modern Japan. He also sprays his vitriol over the film industry in that book and concludes that it is as backward as everything else in this country. He bashes the animation scene of Japan for the cardinal sin of not being as cutting-edge as Pixar. Miyazaki Hayao makes some excellent films, however. I recommend "Kuranai no Buta".

Also for some films that are a little bit different you cold try "Audition" and "Suicide Club". They both star Ishibashi Ryo (who played the investigating detective in the American version of "Juon"). Although I should warn you that "Suicide Club" is consistently disturbing and inconsistently bizarre.

I'd recommend "Linda, Linda, Linda". A feel-good Japanese film that will have you humming the title track long after the credits roll.

for those interested in documentaries or the ongoing Iraq "war", War Tapes came out this summer and was filmed by 3 national guard soldiers. its interesting to see how the soldiers change as they progress thru their tour. i would recommend this film to everyone no matter their feelings on Iraq.

Order it from Yesasia and you will be able to get one, pretty much for sure.

"Old Boy" is Korean....

Actually it's a Japanese story that was adapted into the Korean flick from the Japanese manga of the same name. The Korean actor/director were good and all, but the real genius behind it all was of course the fact that they used the Japanese plot (as if anyone else thinks of such twisted scenarios - that's why the whole film had a distinctly Japanese thriller feel to it)...

In that vein, I recommend anything by Miike Takashi - he's directed several really screwed up but brilliant Yakuza flicks - the most famous probably being "Koroshiya Ichi" ("Ichi the Killer"). Fun stuff Wink

"The House of Fog and Sand" is awesome, along with "Crash" and I'd even go so far to say "Jarhead"(although my husband hated it, but he is a Marine so go figure). I'm a loveydovey girl and adore "The Notebook", but new movies???? Um "Talladega Nights: The Tale of Ricky Bobby" was sooo darn funny only cause I'm from the South and I know people just like the losers in the movie! Very Happy

No, I don't need to push my eyeglasses up my nose. They're fastened tightly onto my head with a headstrap, the next best invention to the pocket protector.

I saw, "Lady in the Water" last night. It was entertaining. Full value for the 1000 yen, 1st of the month movie day. Worth the regular price at the theatre nearest you.

A Scanner Darkly (by the same director who did Waking Life...great movie and total eye candy)

Sin City (extremely violent, simply awesome movie)

Maria Full of Grace: 1000 True Stories (a movie about columbian drug mules)
