Just in from the BBC - a Turkish Plane has been hijacked and flown to Brindisi.
Rumours that the hijacker was an impoverished prime number trying to escape a contract at a language school in Istanbul and get back to the UK have so far proven unfounded. |

You're right, that is about the crappiest hijacking ever. At least he managed to get some beauty contest entrants...
Last night my husband came home in a dither saying 2 Turks had hijacked a plane and were flying it to Italy to make the Pope apologise. This is what he'd heard in Turkish news. I said the Pope has been apologising for the last 2 weeks, and husband replied vehemently that he most certainly had not apologised.
The discrepancies in Turkish and foreign press are both annoying and astounding. It would have been really funny if that guy did hijack the plane in order to make the Pope apologise, but once in Europe was shown stacks of non-Turkish newspapers and non-Turkish news footage showing that apologising has already happened a lot. |

Don't you do the same with your wife?
It's entering low-blow territory, but yes.
I can usually insult Turkish media without him getting too upset. I can also make snide comments about Turkish planning, Turkish construction, and Turks' poor financial skills (which falls under planning somewhat) without him getting too upset... |

Turks usually have such varied opinions about their country, their media, customs and government that they can accept criticism about such things fairly well. As long as it isn't done in a condecending way. Lord knows no country has a monopoly on a "perfect" society.
I dont know how many times, when some crisis happens here, some Turkish friend asks in exasperation, "But why do YOU choose to live here?"
Of course..
The whole "Pope fiasco" was ridiculous from the start. The art of the formal apology has been lost in the these days of political spin. To say that my words have been misunderstood and I regret any insult you might have felt because YOU misunderstood them is cutting it quite close.
On the other side, protesters attacking churchs and threatening violence because they are angry at some careless words about intolerance can hardly do much to prove their case. |

Yes I do the same and I know it is low.
Going shopping-we are buying one pair of jogging trousers or whatever you call them. Then it has to start-how much is the discount if you pay cash? Only 5% well is there are interest if you use your bonus card? NO, we don't accept bonus card but you can use your maxi card-we haven't got a maxi card but if we use our Yapı Kredı world card we can spread the payments over 3 months with no interest-Lets just pay cash for Christ's sake. Why can't they just have a fixed price and either you pay it or you don't? Enough. I have been to Migros several times and have forgotten to take our Migros card and I cannot buy anything much because I know I can't take advantage of the Migros card special offers. |

My wife often says with complete fatalism:
"Migros �ok pahalı ya."
I think they enjoy the endless conversations about how expensive things are-perhaps it comes from the time of high inflation.
I love it on the news after there has been a price increase like for petrol or gas. They interview people on the street and they say things like:
T�rkiye batiyor
Artık ekmek para kazaniyorum
Maf oldum
Nerede devlet |

I am with you on this one. My new hobby is pissing people off who only use cards.(You know the ones- it takes them 10 attempts to find the right card so that they can buy a loaf of bread) Invariably these people are in the supermarket queue in front of me.
I now spend as long as possible getting rid off all my small change in order to get the exact amount possible to give to the cashier. Of course, this results in lots of OOFYA
