| How exactly would you scam the Shinkansen? A conductor comes by to check passenger's tickets throughout the trip... if you don't have one, you gotta' buy one or are busted. If you turn up at the arriving station claiming that you've lost your ticket, you have to pay a fine that would be much larger than a regular ticket would have been. |

If you need a t-shirt or a pair of jeans, go to Uniqlo and steal them.
If you want a bicycle, go to the train station, bust a lock and take one.
If you want a date, go to the bar and slip a pill in a woman's drink.
If you need a visa, go buy a fake degree.

You seem to know a lot about illegal behaviour.
Anybody would think your a dab hand. |

you can buy a ticket for the next Kodama stop and take Nozomi instead.
And when the JR guy comes in the car, just go to the bathroom and hide there.
Not that I am recommending this.
I don`t know how you exit the station. |

It's a little easier than that Brooks.
If your going to Osaka, buy 2 tickets. 1 ticket to the next station and 1 ticket from the station before Osaka to Osaka.
This will cost between 4-500 yen in total and you can save 10's of thousands of yen travelling around Japan.
I am not saying that I have done this but I know plenty that have and they have never been asked for their ticket on the train.
If you are asked then you merely pay the fare.......no probs. |

How do you buy the second ticket, one stop from Osaka? Wouldn't you have to exit the station to get the ticket? Not that I've done it, but I think it could be done if you were travelling with someone who had a teki for that station... But on your own I don't think so. And what's more, to enter or exit the shinkansen platforms, you need a special ticket, not just a regular train ticket.
Anyway, newbies... It's dishonest. Don't try it! |

You can buy the prepaid ticket either from the ticket machine or from the ticket office.
It really is that simple.
If you know the date of your return than it's easier to buy all your 4 tickets in one go. |

That's an interesting idea. So, if I understand correctly...
Person A is in Tokyo and wants to go to Osaka. They buy one ticket from Tokyo-Shinagawa and one ticket from Kyoto-Osaka. Is it possible to buy a Kyoto-Osaka ticket while in Tokyo? I guess you'd have to do it in advance at a staffed reservation desk (I'm fairly certain a machine won't do it).
But if you don't put your Kyoto-Osaka ticket through the gate, the machines at the exit gate will know that it wasn't used. And then when you go to the exit ticket window, the staffer will try putting it through the machine. I guess if you could just walk through without slipping it through a machine, it would work. Hmmm... interesting, but I doubt it would work hassle-free. You'd probably have to play the part of the confused foriegner when trying to leave the system. |

I've seen and known a number of foreigners getting caught trying to pull off various scams on public transport here. Either they would buy child tickets and put them through with the machine-activated voices saying "kodomo kippu" as the seemingly oblivious six-foot gaijin walks through the gate. Others would share teikis and send them back for their friends on the other side.
One ex-coworker would always tailgate frightened commuters about an inch behind them as they walked through the gates. This guy was caught as he had been seen doing this a number of times by the gate inspectors and one day was finally hauled into the office and told never to do it again. I was hoping they would throw the book at him as everytime I saw him do it I kept thinking "Oh, the shame!" |

I managed to get the info for a ticket for a night bus straight from Wakayama City to Yokohama. 9:30pm to 6:30am booooo.....
costs 13,500 yen round trip. I am gonna bring liquor on the bus and drink til I pass out since I can't usually sleep on buses. Any ideas on how well a 6'3" person will fit on the bus? I am going to an Oktoberfest in Yokohama so I hope it is worth it. |
