Id just like to know how and why people can work over 40hrs a week - 29.5 hr contract or otherwise and not get paid overtime !! - Aint it the law top o/time for over 40hrs work .. ? |
With some companies cancelled classes are subtracted from a teacher's total hours worked. Student no-shows are either not subtracted or only a portion of the planned lesson time is subtracted. When it comes time to check out who gets paid overtime and who doesn't, the management looks at total hours in the classroom plus other activities. It's easy to think that a couple of hours spent doing promotions and other outside-the-classroom activities are adding to one's overtime, but two or three cancelled classes can balance everything out and result in no overtime.
It all just depends on how a school defines actual work time. The best thing to do is have the management provide you with your schedule of your required working hours, personally keep track of all hours of actually worked, and where questions about discrepancies between required working hours and actual hours worked arise, immediately bring them to the attention of your manager. You may irritate him/her enough to stop asking you to do more than you believe you're required to do. Or, you may irritate him/her enough to find yourself without a contract renewal. I think that if you feel you're owed overtime pay, you should stand up for yourself. If your manager is happy with your work, you'll probably be compensated appropriately. |

so hows scheduling there, are they pretty flexible about it, it seems like most people are working from 2-9 or 10, and I'd prefer working in the morning until 5 or so...did they offer a vareity of scheduling options like NOVA?
Anyway, im applying to AEON, i was going to do JET, but I decided not to wait until July, and the difference in salary is nominal considering you have to pay for insurance, rent deposit and key money, and housing would likely be more than AEON's 42,000 yen. |

| There are no morning lessons at Aeon, except for the odd class at 11am on Saturdays. If you work for Aeon, you will probably work from 1pm to 9pm. There isn't much scope for flexibility, I am afraid. Things are about to get a whole lot less flexible too, as 36hr contracts are being (re)introduced in 2007. |

| The change at Aeon has only just been announced to the staff. It won't be introduced for another eight months or so. |

Hey Dipso,
I think you'll find that the change won't be introduced for 8 months for the people already working for AEON but my understanding was that anyone who is signing up with them now will be doing so under a 36 hour a week contract. The wage will go up to 265,000 a month but the rent will also go up to 50,000. The main reason behind all this? All employees will now be enrolled in Shakai Hoken. Those who are already working for AEON (or at least those in Kansai) do have the option of changing their contract starting in November but personally I think I will wait, I like having my mornings free to go jump on a horse! And speaking of free mornings, I think you will have a hard time finding a conversation school that offers a 9-5 schedule since their main clients are students and business people who naturally are unavailble until the late afternoon/evening.

| If you really want to work mornings, try Nova MM center. Most new people get stuck with 7:30 AM shifts. If you want to go out and party, you won't be able to do it with a morning shift (well, you might, but you'll have to be back by 11:00 PM). Although the morning shifts are better for getting stuff done in the day. |

| so why is AEON (re)introducing 36 hour per week contracts? weren't able to get the teacher's to fold promotional flyers on their break time? do they still have pointless weekly mandatory teachers meetings? perhaps they need more time for the teacher's to pressure the students into selling self study materials. whatever it is, the best gift i ever got at aeon was a non-contract renewal. it's just too bad they had to be so unprofessional about it. |

There are loads of bloody meetings at Aeon. I have had four hours' worth this week. Everything is discussed down to the tiniest detail.

| I guess that's one upside to Nova...we hardly had any meetings..the most we had were inservice "educational" lessons with the Titled instructor, which were pretty sweet because it meant you didn't have to teach a lesson and still got paid for one. What are the Aeon meetings about? Meeting sales quotas? |

It all depends on your manager. Our Aeon meetings were only 10 minutes long a few times a week.
Some want to come to Japan and start making demands. I found the insurance fine, I know of someone who had surgery with no probs. YMMV. If you dont like the situation...... |

You teach adults, you get to live Tokyo, your co-workers speak English and enjoy socialising after school, smaller classes, etc... |
