Hello. Just a quick question. I'm thinking of teaching in Taiwan in the future sometime. I have no degree and I would personally like to get a distance degree through Athabasca University. www.athabascau.ca. Now I heard the rumors that distance degrees are not recognized by the government. They have 4 year BA programs and 3 year BA programs. If for arguments sake they did recognize a distance degree, would one be able to get by with a 3 year BA? Or is it mandatory that it must be a 4 year BA? Also, I've been given a site once www.cie.ca and they also have a degree program. The CIE degree program looks a little odd to me cause it looks to easy. If there's anyone who's got into Taiwan and got a legal work permit with a distance degree through Athabasca University or CIE, could you let me know? Thanks.

I have heard, as well, that distance degrees are not recognized in Taiwan. The only country that does not do so.
I have looked at CIE before and it looks much like a diploma mill, much too easy.
For a list of accredited distance masters, go to my site below and click on distance masters on the side bar. |

Most UK citizens with work permits in Taiwan have three year degrees, not four and this is not generally a problem.
Distance degrees are generally not recognised. I believe a diploma plus a TEFL certficate are enough to work legally, but this was not available when I lived in Taiwan, so I will leave a current teacher to fill in the details on that point.
Search for diploma / TEFL, I'm sure you'll get lots if hits. |

| Officially distance degrees are not recoggnised. But you can get away with it. Maybe you won't be so lucky though I think you'll be fine. |
