I have been living here for 5 years.
I have never been physically intimidated.
I have never felt unsafe.
I have never been spoken to impolitely.
I have seen only one fight, involving a little pushing (5 YEARS!)
I'm not trying to win a knockdown argument on this subject - I'm just relating my experience to add more information to the discussion.
Cheers! |

Dude! Have you ever thought about putting that on a T-shirt? I bet you could make a killing!
And yeah, you are damned right about the xenophobia and violence thing. Several months ago, I mentioned that Taiwan is the only place I've ever been where women could feel at ease walking alone down a dark street, let alone a "giant" foreign woman.
No offense, ladies. I meant "giant" in the sense that you are often taller than the local girls. ...Umm, err, eek! Something says I should shut up now. |

[The Chinese, both here and on the main land, are a pretty angry bunch.
Don't mess around or you'll be in trouble.
They are angry and violent.
I've seen street conflicts involving both Chinese on Chinese and Chinese on foreigners.
Pretty ugly. |
Here comes Miyazaki again, with his one-sided prejudiced statements. Where have you been recently?
What exactly is the point of your post? Of course there are SOME violent people in Taiwan, just as there are everywhere.
On average, Taiwan is a much safer place then back home. Many of us even consider the locals to be friendlier than the average person back home. That said, I suppose you have to be open minded to allow for that possibility.
Some new, interesting and pertinent (perhaps) information: Together with six foreign friends, I just finished a 3 day motorcycle trip through the mountains of Taiwan, to Hualien/Taroko Gorge. A GREAT trip, for fellow foreigners who have motorcycles (which are MANY in Taiwan.) |

| In Miyazaki's defense, the few times I have seen Chinese or Taiwanese people irrationally consumed with hatred, it has generally been focused on the Japanese. If I were Japanese, I wouldn't feel 100 percent safe here either. |
