Sigh, I know I posted this topic last year as well, but it continues! The teachers from the Philipines who can't speak English any better than the local Turkish EFL teachers are back!
And, this year I know thier salary, they are cheaper than a Native Speaker teacher. They are getting paid 400 USD/mth. (plus housing)

This is totally outrageous, for them, too! What are the wages like in the Philipines that they agree to work for 400/mth?!? ohhhh, just writing this post is making me mad! offffff ya. [/i]

400 USD is still above minimum wage. that's what is sad.

As a frequent visitor to the Philippines, the wages the Philippinos receive in Turkey ($400.00 and lodging included) would be considered a very good wage in the Philippines....where many doctors only earn $300 U.S. per month.

Philippinos generally have a good standard of English, because the Education system in the Philippines is in English, from grade 6 on, so all educated Philippinos are fluently bilingual, although they have that charming accent, which throws some people off initially.

One thing...teaching English in Turkey for $400 U.S. sure beats the alternative, which would be to work in some of the Gulf countries (UAE, Saudi) for less wages and much worse treatment.

When ghost worked in Taiwan last year, it met hundreds of Philippinos who worked in Taiwan for low wages....and yet they (the Pinoys) managed to send most of their wages home....they are the most loyal and family oriented folk on earth.....and one has to admire their tenacity in the face of adversity....

In Taiwan, EFL teachers from Canada etc....receive about $2000 U.S. per month, but the Philippinos were willing to work for more hours for about $500 a month, and the Taiwan Ministry of Education, is considering allowing Philippine graduates to teach English in Taiwan, much to the chagrin of most of the Canucks and others who are already well established in Formosa and resting on their laurels....many times undeserved....
