Very soon, I'm moving into a one bedroom flat in Sharjah. It will be completely unfurnished. Can anyone recommend decent shops for good, basic stuff? There is an IKEA in Dubai but the thought of having to spend hours assembling it all puts me off going there.

Thanks.

http://business.maktoob.com/retailnew.asp?id=20060329092914I bought a great table and 4 chairs from Home Centre in Dubai, and they delivered it as well as assembled it for under $150.

Another option: lots of supermarkets in the expat neighbourhoods of Dubai will let people post 2nd hand stuff for sale. If you don't mind the drive, it's worth checking out (The Chouitrams on Beach Road comes to mind, as does the Spinney's in Um Sequim). Getting stuff moved to Sharjah can be quite cheap. I used to hire those guys who sat with the big trucks in Bur Dubai (close to Spinneys and the nest of Golden Sands apts).

There are hundreds of furniture shops in Sharjah, many of them selling locally-made stuff at low prices. In fact, the furniture at the budget-price shops in Dubai (Karama, for instance) is all made in Sharjah. For decent quality and reasonable prices, the Sharjah branch of Home Centre is hard to beat. There's a big Spinneys next to it which, I'm pretty sure, has a notice board where people advertise used stuff - you don't have to go to Dubai to find those notice boards.

Al Wahda Street - it runs the gamut from cheap and cheerful to gaudy and garish. There are also a lot of furniture shops on Al Wahda itself. There are used furniture places between King Faisal Road and the Emirates Institute for Banking and Financial Studies. Homes are us might have something fairly reasonable, they're located on the same street as Home Centre ("Big" Spinney's is in between the two).

All 3 Spinney's in Sharjah have notice boards which advertise used furniture and if you have a contact at HCT - they have an electronic bulletin board where such items are advertised.
