| As someone who worked for Nova and taught private students, this is my opinion. Nova as a brand has a lot of power. My private students chose not to buy into that brand for a number of reasons, but my Nova students did. Many of them had been students for years and years. If they hated the way Nova operates, they wouldn't have kept renewing their contracts. I know there is a lot of sales pressure, but if someone is really unhappy with their lessons, they could just not renew. That would be the passive agressive way to go, but its do-able. Nova provides a safe environment for people who may be too intimidated to go out and travel abroad or do a homestay to improve their English. Theres no tests really(unless you are leveled up or choose to do a challenge lesson. If you want to sit at 7b, then thats a personal choice. Those that want to improve and excel do, and those who are content sticking to lower levels do. I had students with Nova that had never left Japan and their English was fantastic. I think it is like anything, people who apply themselves will do well. Those who just want to go and check out a non-Japanese person and learn a bit about another culture are welcome to do that too. But no one is forced to be there. |

Good stuff there. Pretty much on the mark with what I've experienced as well. |

Hey Everyone,
I decided to take the escape hatch.
After only my second day of ditching I opted to leave NOVA and spend my time applying to TEP schools back in the states.
From my own experience NOVA is a fabulous way to use your English as a native speaker to enjoy Japan and all of the culture that it provides. But because of my own expectations of being challenged as an educator, I felt as though there were better opportunities elsewhere.
Here are things that I noted in only two days:
-By the fourth hour of my first day, I had the routine down and no longer had to prep for my course. Just to note, I wasn't the only one...there were two other teachers that had only been there a month and were pretty bored with the job, but excited about Japan.
-I was at a small branch and low on the totem poll, so going home for Christmas looked very bleak since there were more experienced teachers and it was only my 2nd day.
2 days....wooo!!! that's my personal best!!
See everyone on the flip side! |
