| In civilised societies - like Saudi Arabia - we listen to our elders and betters. I am not sure about listening to Maghrebi Maths teachers domicled in London whose hidden agenda is the creation of the 'New Khalifate' covering all of Planet Terra. |
Correct me Scot47, if I am wrong, shall I use, Khalifate with Kh and "f" or Caliphate with "Ca" and "ph", which one is correct? You know I am learning from an expert in English language, who pretends to be "the Queen mother of the English language", but I am not sure if he is teaching me in the correct way. Could anyone help me?
Definitely, I agree, we should listen to our wise elders and betters (both in English, Mathematics, and others). Knowledge is knowledge, is a commodity which is not owned but shared!
By the way, it seems you forgot the following:

Abba
Caliph
Or Khalif
Both are acceptable
As a Maths Teacher you have the mindset 'Right/Wrong", "Black/White" "Either/Or". It is not always so simple in language.

BUT, I consulted my English dictionary, as well Microsoft Word dictionary, both gave me Caliphate and Caliph as the correct words, and not "Khalifate" and "Khalif". So, I wonder which English language you are using? May be my dictionary and Microsoft Word use different English than yours! I think we have to stick to a "Universal English Language" better than using the local one which is spoken in Scotland or Wales !?
I think my "Expert English" teacher was wrong! |

I think that this post may demonstrate the fact that you do have an 'agenda.'
Anyone that knows anything about transliterating Arabic to English knows that because the alphabets are different, different sounds can be written differently... which explains the 6 or so ways to spell Mohammed. Nothing is more useless than consulting a standard "English dictionary".... It normally shows the spelling chosen by those who know the least about the Arabic language... the same folks who say sheeeeek for Sheikh.

Do not worry, Mr Scot, I am updating my knowledge, you know I am applying the saying learn from cradle to grave.
By the way, The New Caliphate which you mentioned in the other post, if it succeeds, I will nominate you to be the Amir of Scotland, and then you can compete (of course, by vote) with his HRH Amir Charles of Wales for the post of Caliph for England, Scotland and Wales. Do not worry, you will have other benefits including furnished palace, 4X4 Land Cruzer, and two yearly return tickets for you and you cat!! And the salary is "top secret" and negociable, and not subjected to UK tax. And you get 12 months paid holiday to the island of "Waq Waq" (near Honolulu).
I forget, also you get free yearly Scottish Highland Dresswear as shown in the photo.
HIS HRN "AMIR" of Scotland only, ready for the battle of kingdom of Scotland !!!!

caliph /"keIlIf, "ka-/ n. Also calif, khalif.From the SOED.
As veiled has said there is no agreement as to how Arab words should be transliterated, and often, as in this case, you have an earlier probably incorrect transilteration becoming a genuine English word.
And for fun we have the American cigarette brand, Camel, which, as the picture on the pack shows comes from the Arabic jamil, pronounced gamil, in Egypt. When they put the brand name into Arabic lettering it becomes Kamil. |

Stephen, I like your analysis and description of the above topic, this is what I call a "scientific mind of research for the topic of Arabic transliteration.
But, why the English gurus of English language of the world do not agree onuniversal English for communication and business? Is it because is not feasible, or not practical?

The word Jamil or jameel means in Arabic Beautiful
The word Jamel is Camel in Arabic.
You are right, Gamel is a pronunciation for Jamel in Egypt (which is not the real Classic Arabic language). Because most of the Egyptians have a problem with the pronunciation of the letter J, so they pronounce it as Ga , For example, the name Jamaal is pronounced as Gamaal (e.g Gamaal Abdul Nacer, instead of Jamaal Abdul Nacer, which is the correct pronunciation in Classic Arabic). |

It's not necessary; all the standard Englishes are mutually comprehensible; the differences are minimal. |

The Egyptian do not have a 'problem' with the pronunciation of the soft 'j' sound. All of them are perfectly physically capable of making the sound. It is just that their dialect of Arabic has chosen a different sound for the written symbol.
A piece of advice for you... math teachers should probably avoid discussing language with language teachers. You are as likely to look foolish as we would if we started trying to explain maths...
