Are the police really cracking down this year?
Who has the info?

It looks like it is true and the police are going to crack down this year. In fact, a pretty reliable source says there will be arrests this year if certain past behaviour is repeated.

Some J friends of ours were begging us to go and we bailed after reading the stuff on the US gov site. We said if we were Japanese we'd go but being foreign and all it seemed like a dumb risk.

They pouted. Then called to tell us they arrived at Umeda (from Kyoto) and got told to get the eff off the train in no uncertain terms. They tried again at Tennoji and it was a mess, with more cops. I don't know who the people were who did the loop line party or how but I know there were a lot of cops and it was apparently draconian according to our Japanese friends.

I caught up with some friends last night who went and the rumours were true. Apparently the police were out in force.

One friend got on at Tennoji and said he was one of 5 people and there were a huge amount of police. They were asked "where are you going?", "why are you here?" etc. etc.

Another person I spoke to got on at Umeda and while there were more people, police apparently outnumbered foreigners. He said the police made a circle around the revellers and followed them onto the train.

Though from the reports I got, no arrests. So, the rumours were true. The police were ready for arrests.
