Can anyone in this forum give me an idea of what life is like in Karlsruhe? I've lived in Kiel and Cologne, Germany. I easily out-grew the former and loved the latter. Where does Karlsruhe rank in terms of entertainment? |

A 'Beamtenstadt' that makes you feel that Harrogate is a wild and groovy place to be. |

Hi Kingbee,
after Kln, Karlsruhe will definitely feel like a small, provincial town to you! It is comparatively laid-back but a city with a history (especially in architecture and the arts) and, most importantly, a university with an international student body!
Choose it for the job but not for itself I would say...but if you do end up going, there is a variety of dance and music clubs, the "Schloss" surrounded by a park area, a Zoo right smack in the city center, a big modern art museum adjacent to a multiplex cinema, a state opera/theater house, an alternative scene and several local bands, in the summer there are lakes for swimming and BBQs, the usual "Feste" and city celebrations, and a free music festival in July. Shopping-wise, you'll be covered, too!
And if you do get bored, other cities in the Bundesland are easy to reach by car or train (Heidelberg, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Konstanz)...or cross the border to spend a day in Strasbourg, France.
How you experience Karlsruhe, as any other place, depends greatly on whether you enjoy your job and who you hang out with. |
