| Should we be allowed to stick the boot into our students? Your thoughts please. |

Not being able to beat students is the cross we have to bear for being teachers. But we do get to go to class hungover and nobody cares. Imagine if you had a good job like a bricklayer for example-you would have to get up early, work outdoors in all weathers, put in a full days work, you could never stay up late drinking and turn up shattered but still get paid.
As Yaramaz said-it is all about balance. |

| You don't beat your students? My school allows me to thrash 3/week. |

| Oh that we could mobilise Corporal Punishment and his whole army: Captain Slap-on-the-Cheek ... Sergeant Slipper ... and the higher ranking General Smack-in-the-Chops and Commandeer Kick-in-the-Nuts |

| This time of year (end of Ramazan) we definitely should be allowed to dole out "wake up and quit giving me that dull-eyed droopy-mouthed look and for Christ's sake at least open your book to the right page and take out a pencil" slaps.... |

| As long as you don't slap their mouth area and inadvertently break their fast. That would be totally haram. |

Nah, I was thinking more upside the head. Today, though, I resisted the temptation to try to slip something, a pencil or a bit of paper into a slack, drooped open mouth.
I don't ask them to actually learn anything. I just expect them to at least pretend like they're trying, perhaps show a little composure. Not necessarily good posture even, just evidence of a spine. I hate to think I ever sat in a classroom with that look on my face. |

Seriously, at that private college in orlu(shutter) , I worked with a fellow from Albania. He twisted ears and slapped heads in the corridors for no reason. In lessons he was a nazi. When getting ready for the theatre show he carried a stick which he used on the students. He twisted arms and barked at the students.
At that time, I thought he was awful, but, you know, the students were quiet in his lessons. They did their homework. They never left their seats. I covered some of his lessons when he was out of town. Those children really knew the material.
When parents came to complain, he looked them in the face and asked, in Turkish, "how can I teach my lessons with such naughty children? If a child is out of line, I will click them on the head to bring them back". The parents always backed down. He's now working there for his fifith year. He is considered a good teacher and gets soooo many private lessons it's crazy. That dude is making a small fortune.

I have adopted this strategy for the toe rag sudents who are caught misbehaving in my class. It really works and you can honestly say you didn't lay a finger on them.
