| Have you looked into language schools in Japan? I worked for Nova and there were a few teachers there who hadn't finished their degrees. The only thing is, you would have to work part time. I knew one teacher that had a college degree and was working there on a WHV. I think their requirements are two years of university study, or a college degree...You would have to check that, I could be mistaken. I think if you get the working holiday visa and your own way there, Nova will set up accomadations and you can also get an interest free loan to set yourself up until you start getting paid. If their teacher shortage situation is the same as it was when I left there three months ago, then you should be able to work enough OT to get along quite well. |

| Rolling Stone, isn't it ironic that you would post "Don't be racist!" on your signature and yet feel it isn't a bad thing to take a pop at the mentally handicapped? |

I don't think i'm explaining this clear enough and for that I apologize because my situation is so confusing.
Here it is in logical order
Ultimately this whole thing is dependant on available funds
1. My goal is to find the cheapest way to teach english in Japan
2. If the cheap way is not an alternative then the next thing in priority is to teach english in a another country close to Japan ( Korea,Tawain ) CHEAP.
3. After working there and getting teaching experience I will then transfer over to Japan.
I simply do not want to wait another 6 months to save up $5000 for startup costs to go to Japan so I prefer to get started right away and teach elsewhere while getting experience . i think i would benefit more going this route. What do you think? |
john,
With a 2 year degree and Canadian citizenship, you have only one visa option open: working holiday visa. If you want to become a student here or study come cultural craft, you can also try to get a student visa or cultural visa, respectively. Both of them will require special permission to work, but that's not a big problem. They just don't allow FT work. The WHV does.
Someone has already pointed out that you need to apply for the WHV while you are in Canada. Go to this site for details, but basically, you need a plane ticket and about US$2000.
http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/w_holiday/index.html
The most ads come out in March, so scour the ads and find what you like, send applications a month or so in advance, and tell them you are going to be in Japan on a certain date. If they agree to interview you then, come, get a cell phone, contact them again to confirm, and then interview.
Your only other choice I can see with "cheap ways in" is to get the WHV and apply to the Big Four eikaiwa (NOVA, GEOS, ECC, AEON) and see when they interview in Canada. I know NOVA hires PT workers with WHVs as long as they have a year of college. This way is cheap only because you won't have to leave Canada for the interview. |

And moderators, can someone please remove that picture. It is extremely offensive and in very poor taste. |

Yeah i kinda figured it would be difficult with only a college degree.
Is there any possible way I can pay for a one way ticket instead of a two way and still get a holiday visa in regards to my situation?
Seems as though most institues favour Uni-Students ...its pretty harsh I tell ya. Shouldn't of quit my computer science degree...but then again I was not enjoying it so i think i made the right decision. |
My advice...forget about EFL in Asia...few people really enjoy it; they do it for all number of reasons, very few of them do it because they like it: number one reasons are paying off debts, getting lost in booze and drugs or just not knowing what to do...again the best piece of advice I have for you is to pursue IT, make lots of money and be happy. EFL is a not a real career for most people, it is a stopover...if I had studied something practical I would not be in EFL now...that's my point of view...BUSINESS, SCIENCE and COMPUTERS are the only viable fields now...good luck |
Agreed |

I would eventually seek a job in IT but want to sniff out Japan just to see what's its like first. |

Wouldn't be surprised if that was Like A Rolling Stone's last post. Silly, in poor taste and he should be banned. Nice way to go out. And he wanted to get to 1000 posts so badly... |

| I've never seen any of Decide's other comments but his initial comments in this thread seem right on the money to me. Not to take away from any people who have made this their career but for I think for the most part he is correct. |
