A friend and I have booked tickets to Phuket for new year's...and I was wondering if you could recommend an area of the island based on this:
-Not interested in sex tourism ...we're both female.
-Nothing too resort-y or Disneyland-y (although I understand Phuket is not the best place to go to avoid that)
-Nowhere too wild or Spring-breakish...we'd like a more laid-back atmosphere with a bit of nightlife but we're not really planning on doing any hardcore partying.
-obviously,a nice stretch of white sand and turquoise water would be nice too..
We'd greatly appreciate any suggestions...and while you're at it, if you have a cheap hotel you'd like to recommend...it would be much appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance |

For God's sake, Jim! I'm an English teacher, not a travel agent!!
Sorry, never been to Phuket. I have a hard time with touristy places. Did you check Kurt's MASTER INDEX yet:

There is a lot of info for tourists. Scroll down.
And send a pm to TedKarma if he doesn't respond soon. He lives down there. |

Probably not what you're looking for but I stayed at Boomerang Travel & Tours at Chalong Circle Phuket last year. Owned by an ex-airline pilot Praphan Satjaraxa and his family (Mr.P.S). They were large bugalows with double beds, fans, fridge for about 400 bht...6 km from Kata beach and about 15 minutes from Patong, in agreat but fairly quiet area...I hired a moped to get around the island to Kata, Patong and Phuket Town...I'd buy 10bht coconuts and mangoes from the local market and put them in the fridge and have them for breakfast...great memories...

You might want to try Kata Beach. Probably the nicest beach on the island - still a fair amount of night life and tourist things - but very little of the "sex tourism" thing. Avoid Patong you and will enjoy yourself.
For the best take on Phuket try "Phuket Delight" at:

You are going at peak high season - cheap will be hard to come by - but there area few bargains - just check the prices at:

Thanks for the help!
Tedkarma...I'm glad you mentionned Kata beach as we booked a room at the Sorrento Guesthouse...they seemed ok and the prices reasonable considering the timing..was wondering if you'd heard anything about it as I couldn't find any reviews on it.
Thank you |

Hi Tedkarma,
the guesthouse seems to have no reviews anywhere on the web and there's only one website that has it on their system...it's under Italian management.
the only thing I know about the location is "Soi Karon 25", I'm assuming it's the street name...it is supposedly between Kata and Karon.
What about Phuket town? Is it really far from the beaches? I found very decent accomodation there well rated by lots of people....but was worried about the location. Is it really bad?
Thank you for your help. |

^ here_now is right.
There isn't too much on the web for this place
other than this brief listing on Hostelsweb.
Based soley on the photographs & published rates,
it looks like a nice place to ring in the New Year.

Soi Karon - probably means it is in Karon - and not in Kata. But, still not familiar with it.
I am less a fan of Karon - than of Kata. The beach on Karon has no trees no shade at all. Kata is a FAR better beach. Just my opinion. |

^ tedkarma is our resident guru on Phuket; trust his advice.
Just for fun; there's a live webcam on Karon Beach,
but you'll need to have Java on your computer
& a decent connection or it won't work.

I like Nai Harn beach the best but there's not much night life to speak of. I'd agree with everyone else and suggest Kata. |
