Hi guys
I am intersted in teaching in Asia and am looking into what placed would suit me.I am after a place with Interesting p/l to meet,an oppurtunity to travel,a scenic place where i could have some oppurtunities to maybe place some tennis or soccer, join a wrestling club or if im very lucky get some dance lessons.
I am planning to stay for a 3 year period and would like to save some money as well as have some experiences.I have a BA,Dip Ed ,and Ma from Melbourne University as well as 5 years experience teaching English to high school students.I would like to find something that pays at least 4 thousand australian dollars a month.
I would like to know which of the Asian countries could meet my needs.I was also wondering if the INternational/ Private schools in the area pay better then the ESL jobs.I would prefer to teach something other then English and have experience in the Humanities fields mainly.

You options would be very limited then. You would have to work in an international school, Korea or Japan. Getting $4,000 ASD is unthinkable in China, Thailand, Indonesia etc.

If it is "unthinkable" for you, then of course you'll never earn it. Wink

whatever? One is probably not going to walk into a 4000ASD job in China or Thailand unless you are certified and get a job at an international school. Of coure a business man can make can make that much easily. You might be able to make that much if you line up high paying privates but that would take time.

Then I'm glad you agree that it's not "unthinkable." For somebody working in the field of language and communication training, it is entirely possible to make A$4,000/month in the places you site.

In fact, people ARE making that much -- and more. And they are not "business men." Wink

$4000 Australian is (at present exchange rate) 361,543 Japanese yen/month. That's extremely high, especially for starting wages in Japan, and I wouldn't expect to land any entry level job with that sort of salary.

You wrote that you have experience teaching English to HS students. Does that mean you have a teaching license? If so, consider international schools, but I don't know the salaries there. Even so, I don't think you'll find any that pay that high. YOu might get lucky, though. Check out www.tokyowithkids.com to see a link to international schools here, and if you can read enough of the language, you might find some salary info.

Entry level work in Japan pays 250,000 yen/month for most jobs (conversation school), and that has been going DOWN in the past year or two. JET programme pays 300,000 and is considered a rather high paying job for beginners here. Unless you have experience in Japan you will probably be considered a "beginner" by most employers. How's your Japanese language skills? If they are fairly high, you might have an edge, but experience is pretty key, too.

The OP definitely has the skills and experience to work in language and communication training jobs. The fact that you don't know what these jobs are doesn't negate the point. TEFLers should widen their horizons.

What for? I like to have time off. I like jobs that give you 2-4 months of vacation time a year!

Hi Hak,
I notice this is a near duplicate of your post in the North American forum. Does it matter to you where you teach? Or are you just looking for a job anywhere?

I arrived in China 5 years ago this month and am still here, would you believe!

Nonetheless, it was not until after I had taught at a "McSchool" for 2 years and at a government-run primary school for another one (year) that I finally managed to land a job that pays quite well, albeit not the AUD 4,000 per month that you quote! Hence, you would certainly have to have a lot of experience - and probably higher qualifications as well such as an MA in Education - if you wanted to earn at least AUD 4,000 per month (equivalent) in China.

I'm studying for an MA in Education myself (due to be finished by the end of 2007, by which time I will have been in China for more than 6 years!) and am hoping that it will lead to something that just might (!) give me a job in the future where I am earning something in the region of what you would like to earn.

An international school could be a good bet for me, since I do hold UK government-approved qualified teacher status that allows me to teach in state secondary (i.e., high) schools in England and Wales.

In fact, my wife keeps on pestering me about the "need" for me to apply to an international school or three after I get my master's! This is partly because we have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and my wife wants me to get a job at a school where the little one can get a free education!!! Rolling Eyes (Either that, or we return to the U.K. so that she can get a free education, anyway...!)

You make what you make in the tefl industry. If you get a little luck and good sleek marketing, you may not walk into a AUD$4,000 a month job, but you might be able to find after a year or two.

If you have teaching certifcate as well as your Dip Ed you could get a job at an international school in Japan. Starting salaries range from about 350,000 yen a month (I think that's about $4000 Australian dollars) to 500,000 per month depending on the school and your years of classroom teaching experience in a K-12 system. Teaching ESL doesn't count unless you were doing it in a K-12 system as a certified teacher. Good luck
