apparently this has been discussed hundreds of times before, but i got to page 15 without success and just gave up.
the korean job board has a page of stickies with FAQ that answers questions like these (as well as the good stickies you already have on this forum). i suggest making some new ones so you don't have to put up (as much) with the likes of me.
anyway, i'm an expat teacher and i would like to go to over-hyped shanghai, and conduct my job-search there.
1. will my testamurs need to be verified by the chinese consulate in my home country?
2. is there any real advantage (besides being able to see the schools) of turning up in china, as opposed to searching from abroad?
i realise there is the expense of existing in china while looking, as well as a possible self-funded visa run, but these don't concern me.
thanks |

i like to see where i'll be working, so personally i always go to the place before signing up for anything. when you do that at least you can meet your colleagues, your FAO, and see where you'll be living etc.
for lots of people it's a less than pleasant surprise to find out they live in some poo-town, with a dictatorial FAO, and idiot co-workers.
Shanghai isn't that cracked up to be. just a busy place, expensive as well, and nothing like the romantic hide-away the name evokes with most people. most areas are stuffed with very tall flat buildings, and that's all you'll see basically when you're working. much nicer (imho) to head for smaller towns where it's easier to get around, and easier to get away from too. escape into the mountains or chill-out spots.
Not to say Shanghai doesn't have that, it's just a drag to get through traffic and then the prices...
and then finding a good job as well. you'll need some time for that you know, and time is precious in SH. the shanghai hinterland is nicer in all respects. check out those places, and it'll still be straight forward to go to Shanghai every now and then if you feel like it.

"Hans BLix": wasn't that the name of the Swedish official in charge of Iraq's nuclear research monitoring programme? |

thanks dajiang.
my questions weren't so much about whether you like shanghai as a city (i've travelled china before), but how much of an advantage i would get by conducting job search after arrival |

No, he was the neutered UN toady that Kim Jong Il fed to the sharks in Team America: World Police. |
