Hello,
I have not posted for over a year. I was interested in Teaching English in the KSA when I graduated in 2004 and then life decisions changed all that. I am now completing a Masters in Managment and my international management class is conducting a survey of how one actually does business in other countries. I have chosen the KSA and since I used to come here and recieve great advice from people who have actually been to KSA I was hoping some of you would help me out by replying to my post. I am looking for things you know of that are unique to Saudi in doing business. Like is bribing common as it is in other Arab countries, is it difficult to start a businesss, do you have to know someone to get things done. I already know about the passport/work permit thing and how restricted it is to move from job to job. What are some of the other buraeucratic issues you have found? Thanks for your help.

Yes, but I don't know that many (any?) of the posters here actually know much about how business is conducted. It is mostly a batch of English teachers. I've never been in Saudi, but I have extensive business background, taught business courses in other Gulf countries... and couldn't answer your questions on any of those countries.
The area of education has little relationship to business in general. You need to find people who have actually worked in business and preferably have started businesses... in various ME countries to know the differences. Otherwise you may just be hearing what is passing around the local rumor mills which may or may not be accurate. (usually not...)
Since this is not related to teaching, people may want to answer by PM so that the thread doesn't disappear or get locked. I don't know how the MODs will look at this one...

| What will you get from this 'research' other than some anecdotal evidence from people who do not understand the society they live in ? |

The act of bribing exists not only in Arab countries, it is everywhere, in US and UK, and It's a human being act, regardless of its ethnicity, colour, religion, or background. The administrative and business system in some of the Arab countries are clean as are some of systems in the Western countries.

The system of trade, business, and labour work is complicated in Saudi Arabia, and if you want more information about the topic, you could check the following links:

Although, Saudi Arabia has good business ties with the West, mainly US and UK, but still not very well integrated with the independent international organizations of business, and still being criticized for some of its administrative and business practice with foreign companies and international organizations. |

Bribing is common, for government procedures and permissions. So is seeking out a member of your family or extended network in the office who can push your paperwork through. Unless you form specific questions, I don't think you will get the details "research" suggests on this forum as its mainly comprised of expat ESL teachers, not businesspeople. |
