I just earned my TEFL certificate in Thailand and now I need to find a job. I was hoping for Japan, but I'm not sure that is possible. For several reasons:

1) I don't have a lot of cash to sit on while I wait for a job. I can afford transportation to Japan and living expenses for awhile, but if I have to make extensive visa runs in getting a work permit, all the while waiting without work, I just won't be able to afford it.

2) I am applying for the JET program. The process begins now, but I wouldn't be placed until like August of next year. I'm not seeing ANY jobs that will hire me for six months.

3) In reference to reason #1, I need a job that would subsidize or provide cheap, single accomodation. I know that AEON does this, but they also recruit from only English-speaking countries. That doesn't help me right now as I'm sitting in Thailand. Is it possible for me to interview with them in Japan on a tourist visa?

If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. I'm just not excited about getting stuck in Korea.

This may not excite you as an option either but it would probably be better for you to get a job back in your home country as that is where you'll have to interview for JET anyway. Getting a job for six months in Japan means that you'll almost certainly have to commit to working for that entire time as you often won't be able to use any paid holidays so soon after starting a job.

How do you think an employer here would react to being told you need some time off to go home for a job interview?

It's been done recently as well as in the past. It's worth a try.

You don't have to make any visa runs these days. Just come here, set yourself up at the right time (now to January is horrible), get interviewed by someone who sponsors visas, and get hired. You can do the visa paperwork while in Japan.

Practically nobody hires for just 6 months. Contracts are almost always for a year. Try Westgate Corporation and see if they are hiring. They have 3- and 7- month contracts depending on what program you want. They've been known to do phone interviews and reimburse US$1000 for airfare. Otherwise, you're going to have to go back to your home country to interview for JET, you know.

You can interview with some of the big four eikaiwas in Japan, I hear. Contact their main offices and see. You stand a better chance overall of getting hired by anyone if you just come here, but as you realize, it will cost money. US$4000-5000 for a couple of months. Just come at the right time.

On the topic of money -- I came here with a little less than $2000 US and it was MORE than enough to get by until I got my first paycheck, which, by the way, was 7 weeks after I arrived.
