Can anyone explain the structure at HCT? e.g. Directors are in charge of the campuses, then Deans, Supervisors and Teachers? Is that how it goes?
Also are there a lot of women in the higher administration? Just curious because as I was looking at the Directors they were all men. I know that it's an Arabic country and that they are progressive...I just wanted to see if there were women in the higher ranks!
Thanks in advance! |

Hi Alecca,
Yes, Directors, none of whom are women, are in charge of campuses, Deans (some women) are next, then Chairs or supervisors (quite a few women) then teachers (lots of women!). There was a woman director in one of the colleges a few years ago but I don't know what happened. Maybe it's just a boy's club!
People used to say that it was cultural because the Chancellor is a Sheikh, but Sheikhs meet female foreign representatives all the time, and we have women ministers in the UAE now, so that can't be the reason. |

Thanks so much!
How about the reporting structure? Do teachers report to supervisors, supervisors report to deans, etc, etc? |

That's a bit more complicated!
Theoretically yes, but depending on the college, the people involved, and the topic, you just never know - this is all politics!
There are also Team Leaders (unpaid positions), who manage the organisation of individual courses, and Academic Co-ordinators (paid) who are supervisor assistants. These positions are held by people who also teach. The Ac Co position covers a multitude, and depends on the supervisor, the co-ordinator and the department.

What about 'Heads'? Don't they have those anymore? There didn't used to be "Deans" - so have they replaced "Heads"?
Is there any place in the known world with more levels of bureaucracy than HCT?
... a big giant herd of people dedicated to meetings... endless, repetitive meetings...
I do hope it's changed from the white boys club that it mainly was then... It was never the local culture that it reflected, but the imported western culture.

Oh yes, they still have them, but they're called Deans now, as you suggest Same carry on, different title! I think it has something to do with the new VC trying to get accreditation from SACS. Most people are beyond being interested at this stage - it will probably all change soon anyway when something else becomes popular |

Yes, after the long-standing director of Dubai Men's retired a few years back, one of the Heads took a temp. role as stand-in Director for a year or so until they found another man to take over. She went back to her former role as a Head, now called Dean. I guess Deans make around Dhs. 30.000+ p.m., so not too bad.
BTW, one supervisor used to front a band p/t called 'Next Flight Out' - a tongue-in-cheek hint at some of the unpredictabe moodswings which can accompany the unfettered, though deceptively docile, bureaucractic management.
One dramatic, albeit extreme, symptom for example is being goose-stepped off the premises and onto the next flight out, if you happen to make a step seen as wrong by the wrong person (with seniors breathing down their neck and their own jobs on the line) at the wrong time - can be brutal and there's usually at least one tremendously exciting occurrence somewhere in the system every year. All part of the docu-soap. On occasions such as these, loyalty to colleagues can be a dangerous thing, reflected in somewhat paranoid fashion by one teacher, for instance, who used to have a "Trust no-one" reminder to themselves pinned over their desk. |

The female director referred to was at AAMC. She was there 1997 to 99 but fell foul of the tight clique at the top who didn't like her shining a light on any of their cosy / murky dealings... and if any of the Deans earned anything like 30,000 they'd be very happy indeed. Their range is 20 to 26. Everybody overlaps on the scale up to an including the deans - then there is a huge jump to directors (OK there are some associate directors floating around, but let's not spoil a good story) who start at 34. |

Trust No One pinned over the desk? That sounds like me, at Dubai Women's! I also had "Deceive, inveigle and obfuscate" up there and an occasional screensaver of the UFO with I WANT TO BELIEVE on it. Aw...I was just an X Files fan. It was one of my little ways of escaping. And--I was actually rewarded with an autographed picture of Gillian Anderson, her reply to a whimsical letter I had sent her, inviting her to clean up my files...lots of files...lots and lots of files... |

Passive resistance also works. Say yes to someone's face, smile, never disagree but when their backs are turned ignore them and do what you like. Chances are you'll get away with it. I have for eleven plus years. Definitely keep a low profile and don't get involved too much. As for participating in sack races, no need. If collared to do something, do a lousy job so you're not asked again. |

As I said...so? It's also a rational response to the reality and circumstances at hand. |
