You shouldn't have to leave the country to get a work visa.
I changed my F visa to a work visa (permanent residence permit) without having to leave Shanghai. Just go to all the appropriate offices to get it all done. Quite easy actually. |

But then you must have been here for at least 5 years and made a serious contribution to China's economy to qualify for a permanent resident's permit! |

It used to be that a temp residence permit is for 6 months or less and a permanent residence permit is for +6 months. The permanent residence permit you are referring to is the 5 year residence permit, not the same.
I got my work visa and residence permit (both on the same sticker) in Shanghai. Who says you need to go to HK or leave the country? |

Huh?? Open Webster's and look up "permanent." Permanent = forever. Five years is not forever.
Stepp is correct when he says that permanent residence permit is another term for the new green card scheme. |

Your own misdinterpretations! Resident's permits are all "temporary" i.e. defined in terms of their validity from one month to one year, with the bulk of them being 6 month or 12 month permits. |
