You can't unless you have a full work and residence permit.
Any good boss can get you one. ( good luck finding a good one )
If you know anyone who works in a bank, then they can help you out,
a bit of game but you can get things done on the side... |

Well, buggery. I won't have a residence permit :/ Also, don't know anyone that works in a Turkish bank unfortunately.
I just don't want to have to keep withdrawing money from my UK bank account at ATM's in Istanbul, as their exhange rate is probable crap and also get charged for it.
Also, FGT suggested opening a Nationwide Building Society account but I am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to before I go, as there isn't one anywhere near me, and I don't really have the time to make the 40 min trip into Leeds before I go. |

Getting a tax number is easy. First you need a work permit but before you get the work permit you need to get a residency permit. In order to get a residency permit you need to get work, or have another reason to be in the country. In order to get work you need to be in Turkey to sign the contract and then you need to be in you home country to get the work permit, are you following? Step one: come to turkey Step two: go back home Step three: come back to Turkey again. Once you finish all three steps you can go to the tax office.
This is the official version.
Some people get work permits without going back home, but they are lucky |

| I've heard Garanti bank will give you an account without a tax number. Pretty sure this is true. |

or just go to the local tax office and get a number. Then armed with this go to a bank and open an account. Then to get a residence permit go to the emniyet in Aksaray with a bank statement. For a 12 month permit you'll need the statement to say you have 3600 dollars in you bank account. The max. you can get is 5 years, so 5 yearsx12 monthsx 300 dollars.
work permit is down to your employer
a friend went through all the bulleacracy last week. So this info is current... at least until tomorrow |

| You can go to Garantibank (in Bakirkoy at least) and get a bank account opened, that's a Turkish YTL and a foreign currency account, all without a tax number. Just take your passport, make sure you know your address, and bring some sort of thing to show that you're a teacher. My bosses business card did the trick. Super-easy. Oh, and don't do what I did and lose your PIN number within about a day. |

| the tax office in beyoglu only requires a passport photocopy and a dilekce, which is a request. Someone can help you write it on a piece of paper. then they give you a tax number. however, in kadikoy, apparently, the people at that tax office want a notarized translation of the passport, but i think they are just jerking people around. i have never heard of having to have a residence or work permit. |

As I said you can get around the work permit problem.
As you well know Molly the law is one thing and enforcing it is another.
Your not ment to work without a work permit. Yet most of the staff in most of the Mc schools in Istanbul are full of teachers who have to do a three month boader run. So what you know and what you can do are often quiet different form the law. |

like the law that says 30%(?) or whatever percentage of seating in bars and restaraunts are non smoking. They are supposed to put cards on the tables saying they are non smoking. apparently the owners complained because no-one was sitting in them and so they were losing business.
EDIT sorry this only applies to the Sisli area. |

Kodak I think you were asking about mobile phones before. All the Turkcell shops are running a campaign at the moment on a motorolla phone C113? I'm sure the phone isn't up to much but for 109 YTL you get a sim card(with 20 konturs)+1000 free konturs. So buy the phone use the konturs, when they are finished get a new phone and you'll have a number.
Obviously being Scottish, I'd like to take advantage of this but I need to keep the same number. |

Ah, thanks for the heads up. I'll bring my phone from home and just shove the sim card in it. |

It's been mentioned before, it could lead to problems. ie non use.
Ive just bought a new phone(20 minutes ago) needed passport, address and old number. When they put the details into the computer they asked if I wanted my old phone book transfered to the new phone.(I ahd to get a new sim card) I had appplied to some sms sent by turkcell ages ago asking if I wanted all my details stored. (I can't remember what I did though) |
