The word sabbath derives from the word meaning "seven." The seventh day is Saturday. The first, of course, is Sunday. Friday cannot possibly be the seventh day in any counting scheme, but Saturday and Sunday were already taken. Wink

Doesn't the sabbath begin at sundown on Friday? Or am I confusing it with Islam?

All Jewish ritual observances begin on sundown of the "eve" of the actual day. Yes, the Jewish sabbath begins at sundown on Friday, because the sabbath is Saturday. The sabbath ends at sundown on Saturday.

Duuuuuudes;
like, dudes, like, y'know? Like, like, like, like, like, I was like reading this like, um, thread, like, y'know? dude? and I was like, uh, "woah; these like dudes are like totally like basically like y'know, like, talking about, like, me! I like totally talk like that!" like, basically, like, y'know? And I'm from like, um, y'know, like, Canada? Y'know? And I thought WE like started it, y'know, but like, Woah! I guess I was like, totally wrong, basically. Y'know?
So, as a rabid Canadian nationalist-superiorist dude, I don't like saying 'like' anymore, cause it's not, um, Canadian enough. From now on, I'm gonna, um, I'm gonna go, like, "fawken," again, like I used to, instead of going like 'like' all the fawken time.
Uh...er...hmmm...well...uhhhhh...something totally like that, basically.
Y'know?
P.S. it's not an expletive, it's a reference to Guy Fawkes.

The penalty for breaking the Sabbath is death; wonder why Jews don't practise that one anymore? Wink

For the same reason that Christians eat shrimp and lobster -- because the penalty obviously doesn't exist.

It does in the bible; should I cite the passage? Oh well I guess so;

Exodus 31:14
Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death.

Exodus 31:15
Whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

Exodus 35:2
Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.

Numbers 15:32-36
And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day. ... And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp. And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses.

That's God speaking; it clearly states that anyone who works on the Sabbath should be killed.

If you think the New Testament repeals that, think again:

"Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to
destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away,
ONE JOT OR ONE TITTLE WILL BY NO MEANS PASS FROM THE LAW till all
be fulfilled" (Matt.5:17-1Cool

And God was like "You work on the sabbath and like you're going down, man" So this guy was like picking up sticks y'know and then like this bunch of other guys were like, hey that dude's doing stuff on a Sunday so God goes like "put the guy to death". So the guys get the first dude and throw like these big rocks at him and then his head like splits wide open and blood goes everywhere and it was like awesome but then God goes like what are you guys doing putting some guy to death on the sabbath that's a little too much like work to me so then God like fires this bolt of lightning and all the other guys like burst into like flame and then God looks at all the destruction that he like wrought and God was well pleased.

OH MY Gawd, I can't like believe you guys don't know about this:

"Let him who is without sin cast the first stone

According to the Gospel of John, the Pharisees, in an attempt to discredit Jesus, brought a woman charged with adultery before him. Then they reminded Jesus that adultery was punishable by stoning under Mosaic law and challenged him to judge the woman so that they might then accuse him of disobeying the law. Jesus thought for a moment and then replied, He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her. The people crowded around him were so touched by their own consciences that they departed. When Jesus found himself alone with the woman, he asked her who were her accusers. She replied, No man, lord. Jesus then said, Neither do I condemn thee: go and sin no more.

I think like the dudes in the Bible were like totally confused. To stone or not to stone.... that is the question.

The penalties for not observing the sabbath and for eating shrimp are the same. And yet they obviously don't exist, because I do both.

Because people nowadays obviously find the bible too barbaric to do what GOD WANTS...

I think what Deicide was saying is that the use of "like" is most prevelant in America and it is overuse of "like" which smacks of inarticulation, not necessarily that Amercian English speakers are more inarticulate.

While I agree that those who overuse "like" tend to do so because they are inarticulate I don't believe that it is only Americans that do this. The use has spread to almost every native English-speaking community and is used by inarticulate speakers of every nationality. Previously, inarticulate British English-speakers made use of "y'know" to parade their inarticularity (is that a word?).

Watch almost any interview with a footballer (soccer player for anyone who makes up two-thirds of the native-English speaking world).

Indeed I meant just that; Beckham's English is not very flattering...sigh...how much does he earn? Why does a footballer who sounds like a such git receive such a ridiculous salary? Shocked Shocked Shocked

Why? Because someone is willing to give them that salary. Rolling Eyes
