Changes
For those of you thinking about working at HCT, heres the best gossip about what will happen at the end of January, 2007:
1. Housing allowances will be cut 20%. Staff will be expected to make up any difference out of their base pay. (The aim appears to be to encourage staff to take out mortgages to support the housing market.)
2. Tickets and educational subsidies wont be provided for children.
3. Neither will tickets be provided for spouses.
4. Standard teaching load will move up to 25 periods, each 55 minutes.
As always, there are people saying If they do that, Ill leave. Some will. Many wont. HCT has changed working conditions before without a mass exodus, so it has no reason to fear one now. |

Bring it on!
BTW, last person to leave, please turn off the lights. |

Grendel,
We know that HCT colleges need more teachers but you said they are going to eliminate essential benefits such as educational allowances for the kids. Isn't it contradiction???
If this is true then all teachers who will be hired must be single or married with no children. Is it hard to believe it ?

Based on the above missive, I assume you are not a native speaker of English and consquently are not applying for a job as an English teacher at the HCT.
As for the rumors, I suspect there a bit overblown. I can speak with some experience, having been at the HCT for over ten years. Increasingly, however, I feel that I got in at the right time and my tenure is drawing to a close after my fourth contract. Financially it's been a good run indeed. |

Chkl,
I did not understand your disturbance. Make sure your respond is always positive and meaningful. Yes, I am not a native speaker but I am not a monolingual person like you.
Be wise

I just love the HCT rumour mill, and the best stories always include a conspiracy theory! |

Especially as there is another thread where some were complaining that HCT had forbidden teachers to use their housing allowance to buy property.
Until we see it written on paper - ie, a contract - assume that this is just another of the thousands of 'they are cutting our pay and benefits!!!' rumors.

Similar rumors are bubbling up at UAEU/UGRU. We just got word that our health benefits have been drastically reduced-have been--as in the changes were made before they told us. We're all waiting nervously to hear what is next.[/i]

This shouldn't come as a surprise, remember the what happened at AUS last year and their benefit package.

What happened last year to AUS benefits package?
BTW Gulfnews had an article about expat children becoming eligible for gov't schools in primary and secondary ed. Since all else has failed, maybe the presence of "real" students in the national schools will bring up the standards, at least on paper.
Not holding my breath, I may may need it someday. |

Re 'Expat children to get free education', bear in mind that this was said at the World Leadership Summit held in AD yesterday and the exact words were 'the government is seriously considering introducing a free public education system for non-UAE nationals'. Who really believes this anyway but it sure makes a good headline.
As far as the HCT doom and gloom report goes well nothing would surprise me especially an increase in teaching load ( might as well be a highschool teacher) however, re housing allowance cut to encourage taking out mortgages, well how would that work as HCT does not actually pay hosuing in cash but provides the housing.
This sounds like typical scare mongering by management to make the underlings realise how good they actually have it now and how much worse it could be. |

Pourquoi?
..you seem to betting the house on securing a position at the HCT. Why? |

I'm interested in knowing why Buur would assume that ckhl didn't speak a foreign language ...

If there were anything even slightly sinister in his assumption, his post would become a wonderful example of the left-hand not knowing what the right is doing ... |

Sheikh,
You don't need to defend Chkl. Let us focus on the topic, which is "changes at HCT".
