I have finally discovered the solution for feeling a little sad, a little depressed and a little lonely in China... do more not less.

I have recently asked one of my classes if they wanted to perform "A Christmas Carol" for Christmas time, and they are so into the idea... I have printed out scripts, assigned characters and started practicing.

I love acting and live theater, I have been missing it very much since I came here, as in Australia doing live theater was the one thing that made me feel alive.

So doing it here has made me feel alive again.

What have other people done to break the blues? My boyfriend still has them.

P.S. If anyone wants my script (about 12 pages of easy-ish English) pm me.

Most of the FTs I came in to contact with do the following to combat the blues:

Drink to excess, many of them everynight.

Get high...

Bang little Chinese girls ( except for the few puffdas I met, they like the little boys...)

Me, don't like the alcohol or drugs, or even the bar scene too much... but the girls will keep me happy.

buy a motor..travel to other places even near your home that you could not get to on the bus...new is always interesting
.quit talking to Chinese people..they waste your time..

keep foreign and Chinese separate...get your own apartment...get a satellite dish...
save half you paycheck...you will feel the accomplishment..

most important ..define yourself by your past time and not your work...

Be careful, however, as excessive drinking combined with the air pollution in China can seriously weaken your immuned system...I got pneumonia while doing just that in Wuhan this summer...I can't see how tasting the local female culture could hurt, though Rolling Eyes ...although sometimes some outcomes have brought me more down than up (no punn intended)...but everything is cool now Very Happy; just need a job, hehe

yeah CJ a motor - that certainly does make a huge difference!!!!!!

On the survival side - basic blues combat techniques include -

. being able to cook for yourself - once in a while - something that reminds you of good ol' home (even if it only includes the culinary expertise of opening a tin of beans). Make sure that your accommodation has some type of cooking facilities. A micro can be invaluable tool in combating the "I can't stand Chinese food no longer" blues - a type of blues that can hit away at the very foundations of your China existence.

.keeping yourself cool in the summer and warm in the winter - don't laugh newbies - Chinese housing can leave a lot to be desired on these two points (well at least what the average westerner desires) - air cons and heaters can improve life quality no end and help you sleep-off your blues - especially after working in the Icebox/sauna conditions of the classroom.

I keep a blog and write about the eccentricities of living here. If you can turn a frustrating day into an 'anecdote', you can see it in a different perspective.

Plus I get loads of email saying 'wow, I envy your life in China' etc (if only they could see it, though!)

Also, when everyone is busy and there's f.a to do I like to walk around the city- the exercise helps to keep a more positive attitude, and I always find something interesting on my excursions.

Hey there are some great suggestions in the previous posts...

Yet another thread witha somewhat pointless title. What's with 'hating' this place? My what a cheerful Sunday afternoon on Dave's.

Thanks doc but it really depends if you are wearing a hat. A hard night of drinking now and again won't take you out like certain std's. I'd rather be a bit ill than have warts on my dik.

GET ON A BUS, ANY BUS, GOING ANYPLACE. rIDE TO THE END OF THE LINE AND THEN BACK TO POINT OF ORIGIN.

Great way to see parts you would otherwise never see. Great way to learn the city and the bus routes.

Meet some interesting people, some even speak English.

I am reminded of the rancher from Texas who was bragging about how BIG his ranch really was. "My ranch is so big it takes me all day to cross it in my pick up truck."

The farmer from Missourie said "I understand, I had an old truck like that once."

TW, some of us get our work done a little quicker than others.

And some of us can produce quality faster than others who are still riding around in that old truck.
