For some reason Japanese people seem to really hate root beer. Have you noticed it's almost impossible to find on a menu? If they have heard of it they will probably shudder at the thought of it.

Also, when I explained poutine to some students they were pretty mystified as to why you would want to eat french fries with cheese curds and gravy. They didn't even know what gravy was haha.

That's cos they think it tastes like medicine. Anything with a vaguely anise/licorice taste tastes like medicine to most Japanese. I once made ginger beer (brewed using natural yeasts right here in Japan cos Canada Dry tastes like Sad ) and as a twist popped some cinnamon and star anise in to try an emulate sasparilla/root beer and my Japanese friends said - "Yeah, this tastes really healthy, good if you had a cold".

As for this, this sounds utterly disturbing and it is perhaps to the great merit of the Japanese that they have never heard of gravy. That said, they do have ankake which is kinda like gravy...

You can get poutine at Becker's (a chain burger/sandwich shop) locations in Tokyo and Yokohama.

Enjoy

then you leave japan and wonder why everyone insists on putting avocado in sushi. maybe it's because avocado and wasabi look similar. on the other hand, vegemite and sump oil look similar, but only one of them is good on toast with lashings of butter.

after a night of drinking rye and coke to excess I knew I couldn't have something sweet such as honey or jam on my toast that morning.

this is how kimchi on toast was born.

staggers most japanese, but what's bread if not a cousin of rice in the carb family? quite good for getting the system runnning the next morning just make sure you time your trip the office right or else.

and if you ever went to set an italian off, tell them that the italians learned about pasta from china
