Hey all, Just wondering if anyone can tell me the situation on finding teaching positions in these areas(Phuket, Surat Thani, Ko Samui)...is it difficult? I have heard of the Tesol school in Phuket, do they usually take there teachers from those graduates or can one have some luck getting a position with the same qualifications from else where? Or is it slim pickings?
Does anyone have any feedback on these areas as good/bad etc...places to teach?
Thanks in advance for any info! |

Dearest:
teaching jobs at the resort areas are tough to come by, there are often hundreds of applicants per position. It is also very expensive to live in these places. There are also lots of tempting places to spend your paltry salary.
I live in Suratthani Town. Plenty of jobs, a couple hours away from the great resorts (and some interesting, cheaper, more Thai beaches.) Living here is cheap. There is a great closely knit teacher community.
It can be a bit overwhelming at first. There are few Western foods or products available, and the cultural immersion can be a little work. Most of us learn to love the place eventually, and we have a much more authentic Thai experience.
So, my advice is give up on hunting for resort jobs. Go for the real Thai experience in the South, and go away for beach fun! |

Hey mookamook,
Thanks for the great advice...I totally understand that these are resort areas and agree they may not be the easiest or most desired for teaching positions...we are not married to the idea of staying primarily in these areas, just inquiring for interest sake as well as giving us more direction as to where we should head! So Surrathani is a good place to be! That is fantastic to hear cause we have looked into this area as well...we are coming and are up for anything and do want the real thai experience...is there any teaching positions in your school that you know of? Do u teach at a school? What other great advice is there out there for places to head...we will be there in January so will this be a tough time to find a job? |
