Excuse me, but where do you get that sort of money in Turkey? As far as I know, most teachers with qualifications get an average hourly rate of between 14 YTL and 20 YTL in language schools in Istanbul to name a few English Time, Interlang, Dilko, British English. If you calculate the average classroom hours as 120 in a month as most experienced teachers will probably agree that above 120, the quality will suffer because you are actually teaching not working at MacDonalds, then your full-time salary will be between 1.680 YTL and 2.400 YTL rough equivalent to $1.120 and $1.600.

What exactly have you been offered 35 ytl/hour for doing?

salaries: I think k-12 schools pay more than dershanes, generally speaking. I think the secert to finding a good salary here is knowing a lot of people, which basically just comes with time. So, if you a fresh-off-the boat yabanci (even with a lot of experience) you may not be offered the same salary as someone who knows all the right people.
This said, I agree with Yaramaz, good paying jobs are here to be found, if you look around and negotiate well.
rent: we also have rent inflation issues, we have no signed contract (a subject of hot debate here at our house, but this would be a different post) We have asked 4 different, unrelated lawyers, they all say - It is the landlords fault he didn't have you sign a contract. If you want to be polite, pay a rent increase the rate of inflation (there is a real law about this, every so often they cover it on the news) But, since you have no contract, you can pay whatever you want (ie - nothing, even) It will take the landlord years (2-ish) to drag you through the courts and in the end the courts will find in your favour, since landlord gave you no contract at the beginning,
This said, the "pay nothing and wait for trail" is not a recommeded course of action, and obviously not an opition at all unless your Turkish is good enough to handle the court system.
I would settle for the "pay what you want/about the rate of inflation" and Landlord will make many pestering phone calls which should eventually taper off. We paid ours just slightly above the inflation rate, he accepted, now we get another 12 mths until the circus begins again. Smile good luck

K-12s do pay more, but the flipside is that, well, you have to teach k-12. I did that for two years and when I moved on to a dershane I couldn't believe how easy it was to teach, how lovelythe students were to work with, how much I actually improved as a teacher because I wasn't spending 2/3 of my tme on discipline... There is a reason why kolejs pay you more.

The universities, for me, were a bit easier to deal with than the k-12s, but still you are dealing with 20-25 cooped-up rich kids in a room, with attitude and lethargy to spare. I was lucky in my second term last year because I had some amazing scholarship kids in my classes, but i still wasn't worth the negligible pay rise from derhane land.

For higher pay, there are a number of smaller outfits, no names mentioned- you go find them yourself- which pay 30-45 ytl/hour. I know several people working for such places. They aren't the backpacker joints. I also did some evening work at Bilgi Egitim, which is the university's adult learning annex, and they offered 45ytl/hour.

Or go private, and charge whatever you fancy.

Probably, but I really didn't want to stay long enough to get it. I'll probably do my masters instead anyway.
