You may be able to find a tour guide at www.couchsurfing.com - everything you need to see will be in the Lonley Planet, foot massages, Taipei 101, CKS memorial; etc |

Take the train to Hualien. The tourist info place will have info on hostels, etc. The local backpackers there is formosa. Yanti will help you out if that is what you need to rent a scooter or be put on a tour bus to taroko. I would recommend the former. Otherwise there are a couple cheap hotels near the train station and plenty of places to rent scooters.
Hualien and Taroko would probably be the one place you should see here. After that see what the LP says or be more specific about what you want to see. The East coast is great for nature but maybe not so much for temples. |

Ki has some good advice there. Get to Hualien, and you can easily find your way into Taroko from there. Make your way to the Foromosa Grand Taroko. But opt for one of the hostels if you're looking to be a bit frugal.
Taroko is huge, you could spend easily 2-3 days there and see a wide range of different things. Waterfalls, raging rivers, hot springs, temples, traditional towns, mountains, snow, trees, the ocean. Here's an example of a few pics I snapped there.
Yes, hard to believe that this is Taiwan. I couldnt believe I was standing there taking the pictures to be honest.

BW,
Thanks for the kind words. Try the southern cross island highway. Good on a scooter. Great on a bicycle.
Also up Taroko and back along to Ilan is a great ride if you have the time and the stamina. Lots of nooks to see all over the island if you can find them. |

Nice photo.
Hard to believe it's Taiwan.
But then I never really get out of Taipei.

Thats too bad. I've spoken with so many teachers around Kaohsiung who have never even been to Maolin (1hr scooter ride). The only way to experience this beautiful country is to get out there and see what its all about. Its so much more than traffic, smog and neon signs!
I appreciate the comment about the photo, its one of the best ones i've taken since i've been here.
Cheers, |
