Hi Sherri,
I see you are on the Big Island. Are you from there? I am from Hilo and taught in Japan. I just saw your topic and thought I would say Hi from a Big Island girl to another. Did you teach in Japan? I was there from 1998-2005.

I am never leaving! I don't earn much but my quality of life is much higher than it was when living in Japan. I never stop marvelling at how beautiful it is, every single day. This is the place to live after you have saved working in a country like Japan. And now I feel like my life is blurred between Japan and the US, since most of my students are from Japan and I work with Japanese people.
Hi Holly, I was in Japan from 1991 to 2004. Are you in Hilo now?
Looks like it is going to be another beautiful day here!

So did you get a chance to see the outer islands, taikibansei, or were you on Oahu the whole time? |
Just spent time on Oahu...and really didn't get to see enough of that either. Darn meetings....

I asked about this. Apparently, two people would have trouble surviving even on an associate professor's salary. Indeed, according to two BOE members, this is one of the reasons for Hawaii's surprisingly high teacher turnover rate.
Housing, especially, is a major concern. Prices have supposedly doubled since 2001...and sadly, teacher salaries have not.... |
