Saudi Arabia says it will begin construction next year of a hi-tech security fence to seal off its border with Iraq against extremists.
The cost of the project is some $12 billion and that the security efforts will include the latest technology.
The huge project to build the barrier, which will be equipped with ultraviolet night-vision cameras, buried sensor cables and thousands of miles of barbed wire, will snake across the vast and remote desert frontier between the countries.

"Despite the details emerging about the fence, Saudi Arabia's military is keeping some aspects under wraps. According to one source, the project is being kept so secret that military officials from Centcom, America's central command responsible for Iraq, have been told they cannot inspect the site on "national security" grounds.

Even spy satellites will not be able to unravel the fence's secrets. The source speculated that the reason for the secrecy might be automated weapons systems attached to the fence that could fire on suspected smugglers or intruders."

For Saudi Arabia, terrorists and refugees from the conflict are not the only unwelcome intruders."We suffer badly from illegal immigration, as well as the smuggling of drugs, weapons and even prostitutes," said Mr Obaid. "It is becoming a major issue."

Is this being built to stop EFL teachers doing a runner from KSA?

My first thought was to wonder if it was to keep the Saudi in or other out. Cool

I think, one of the main purpose of the fence is to stop the Saudis to go to Iraq to fight againts the Americans and the British, and in the same time, to stop the Saudis to come back after the war in Iraq is finished!!! May be I am wrong, you never know!

Good observations 007, given the internal crisis Saudi is facing with extremists going overboard with things, it seems they would rather let them go to war, then lock the gates so they cant come back. Afghanistan, Chechnya and Iraq are examples of KSA opening those doors so the jihadis can take off, and I don't think they want them all to come back. The muttawa - liberal ratio needs to be maintained. Let's think of it mathematically;

1. Muttawa + Muttawa = plotting
2. Muttawa + Liberal = balance
3. Liberal + Liberal = star academy

You missed one important equation, I think, is more important than the above ones:

4. Amirs + Muttawas = Political Power
5. Energy = Mass (population) * Politics^2

What do you think?
I hope Albert Einstein won't get upset with me! Laughing

Qos: Sorry to nit pick but what do you mean by:

1. Muttawa + Muttawa = plotting

Plotting? What are they plotting? Does that go for all the Muttawas? Big generalization isnt it!

007:

4. Amirs + Muttawas = Political Power
I do like this equation; its probably the golden one which keeps the government intact. However things seem to be changing and its being re-examined to see if it's still mathematical!

The above equation is 'mathematically' wrong, but 'politically' correct, and as far as there is a 'marriage' between the two parameters in my above equation, the SA political solution to the equation exists and belongs to the real domain.
Now, if the two parameters in the above equations are not in 'marriage', then the solution exists, but it belongs to the 'imaginary' domain.
Get a mathematical dictionary to solve the above equation. Laughing

If you were truly sorry, you wouldn't nit pick.

When people make goofy math equations to simplify social issues, we call these "jokes." Anyway, yes it is a generalization, and who made you the ESL muttawa of catching generalizations anyway?

However you are persistently sensitive about a subject, which is rather humorous since you arent even a native of any Arabic country, and 007, is. This is more than enough to reveal to this Queen that you are one of those employees that enjoy tipping off "jihads" on activities at "liberal" colleges in Riyadh. And before you ask, to answer your forthcoming question about why I am "generalizing and not being "Western" and assuming innocence until proven guilty, it's because I smell a rat.

I like this .... innocence until proven guilty, but unfortunatley, these days we see .... guilty until proven innocent

I hope the rat is not an undercover brother nor an undercover sister Laughing

Again, you do surprise us. Perhaps you have a background in Math?

Qos:

However you are persistently sensitive about a subject, which is rather humorous since you arent even a native of any Arabic country, and 007, is.

How do you know Im not a native of any Arab country, who grew up in the West? There are thousands of Arab-Americans, Arab Irish, Arab-British, etc. Why cant I be one of them! Another assumption on your part without any facts at all!

This is more than enough to reveal to this Queen that you are one of those employees that enjoy tipping off "jihads" on activities at "liberal" colleges in Riyadh.

Another accusation, mymy, and you say Im the sensitive one, I think people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones.

And before you ask, to answer your forthcoming question about why I am "generalizing and not being "Western" and assuming innocence until proven guilty, it's because I smell a rat.

It could be argued (Im not saying it though) that you're one of those Christian missionary liberal types who hates anyone and anything Islamic, whove come to SA to convert the Saudis into liberals, at the same time you were a failure as a teacher in your native country and couldnt find another place that would take you!

Im sure youre not impressed, so you can understand how your accusations towards me feel; its not nice when the shoe is on the other foot!

You smell a rat! Perhaps you should look at home. It would be nice for you to make a decent well thought out argument for once! Dont you teach your students to support their arguments with facts not just wild accusations?

007:

Very true, this is the new Bush-Blair war monger mentality which is too easily accepted by mindless Western flocks of sheep!

I'm not sure why someone who identifies himself as "MA Student" is posing here as some sort of source of any information...

If you read around on the board, you would know first off that 007 actually is a math teacher, and he has never claimed to be anything else...

And the Queen is a Muslim...

So far it appears to me that you are making yourself look ridiculous.
