| Not you Ali, I was referring to the previous poster, you know, the one who has students beating his door down, throwing money at him. |

I use two systems.
One is to charge per lesson, regardless of the number of students. In this instance it is 5000yen/hour.
Another is to charge per student. Here I charge 3000/month with a minimum of six kids per class for a 45-minute lesson.
My adult students, and childrens' parents feel it is low. Those that have chosen to take classes at ECC Junior with a non-native and apparently unqualified and unappeasing Malaysian woman are paying more. I've also had students who have moved to the city and are completely dumb-founded by the fees they are paying at the larger chain schools.
I have fellow acquaintances who are teaching juku to jr. and h/s students. They are retired English teachers. They charge 30,000yen a month per student for two weekly 90-minute classes. They usually have about 8 students enrolled in their sessions. Do the math. |

1. I don't really want/like to teach privates.
2. I already have too many commitments outside of work
3. That's what I feel my time is worth.
4. The quality of my lessons reflects my fees.

I really don't like privates but when I signed the orginal contract for the job I'm at now, my boss asked me if I could do lessons with him and his wife. I said yes and off the cuff gave him the price of 3500 yen. Then came his sister, and his nephew, and so on. I came here for advice and ended up deciding to charge his sister and nephew a bit more than him. So it all worked out well, but I wouldn't take on any other privates unless the money was really good. I want to enjoy Japan a little bit with my free time as well... |
