As many of you know part of Teaching in Mexico is sharing a house with other people. I live in an old mansion in Guadalajara. It is lovely. I live with two wonderful young people from the States. I say young, because I am 37 yrs old.

My other roommate however is well.......

He is a man from the States about 60 yrs old that lives in our house 4 months out the year. The problem is that he is on 12 different medications and is pretty much stoned most of the time. He likes to dress in Goth clothes. This last Satuday he came into the kitchen weaing all black and a cape like Dracula as well as a skull beltbuckle. I must mention as well that he also put on lipstick, eyeshadow, mascara and blush. It went well with his purple hair and huge beer belly. Apparently he was going to a club.

Does this sound strange to you? It kind of creeped us out.

He is a nice enough chap, however we don't have much to talk about, because he is on so much medication, can bearly walk and spaces out quite frequently. We are afraid that he is going to burn down the house or have another heart attack. He's had two already, plus a stroke. Fortunatly, he is going back to the States forgood next month. Goodbye Dracula.

I don't know why I wrote this, but it occured to me that I have had to live with roommates for the past six years since I began teaching English. It definatly goes with the job and you should accept as part of the lifestyle.

Anyone else had to live with someone strange in their career.

Why? why should you accept this as part of the lifestyle?
The only people I've shared a place with in Mexico are my husband, and for the last two years, our daughters, we've also had a live in housekeeper for the past 15 months.
I lived with people in Japan and Ecuador, but that was the first two years of my TEFL career, after six, I think you should have moved on to jobs that allow you to afford your own place.

5 and a half years ago, I would've said yes. But, after a time here in Mexico, I've learned to expect just about anything out of you Americans. Laughing

Just kidding...some Aussies have been the weirdest for me so far, with some Canadians a close second. Weirdness knows no borders.

of this story was to bring a little humor into things. That's it. It is not part of the teaching English lifestyle unless you choose it. I could live on my own, but it's fun living with people.

That's something I actually look forward to upon starting into the EFL world... I'm tired of living in a quiet one bedroom apartment a block from downtown and a block from the water in a quaint little city where it never gets really cold or really hot. The only thing extreme about it here is boredom and solitude.

I'm surprised more people don't rent rooms in family homes.

i did my first year in mexico and there were rarely dull moments when the family was around. it ended on a bad note but was mostly worthwhile.

i could not live with anyone but an s/o. the only thing that could hold me back from going all patrick bateman on a roomie would be loving them in the more-than-just-very-good-friends way.

That sounds so nice right about now. (Written the morning after an entire night of the barrio celebrating in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe.)

A sixty year old goth, wearing a cape, with a bag full of pills-and you all live in a big ol mansion in Guadalajara.

I'm married and boring now but back in the day I think a night out at the goth clubs with that cat sounds kinda fun.

Brings back memories from university days- on the dance floor with buxom vampirellas corsetts squeezing flesh speed and booze and Bahaus blaring 'Bela Lugosi's dead.'...

Hmm. Yeah, I'm not really sure how the church waking me up at 5 AM this morning with ringing church bells honors the Virgin or anyone else.
