I am shortly embarking on a CELTA course and will be entering the jobs market shortly.
I understand that it is harder to find work in the UK or Ireland as a EFL teacher. However, is it feasible to get just part-time work and do private classes on the side (all year round) as I'm not sure of the possibility of getting full-time work all year? |

Get the CELTA and leave. Living just below the poverty line in the UK is not fun, unless you're going to teach EFL as a hobby. |

You could always take your weekly wages to the bookies, or try the national lottery. |

Do you want to live and work in a society that produced Sutcliffe and Shipman ? |

Where do you come from? that is important. my wife and I do private group classes full time. It takes time but you should know what you are doing. One to one classes are useless because the student are naive and have no mathematical thoughts to the comparison with a group of 12 for example, and as to what they should pay as an individual. |

It might still be a better option than Rockall. |

Are you SURE that you want to take the vows of poverty required of all EFL professionals ? |

If you are doing private lessons, make sure you are always paid one lesson in advance. That way, you lose nothing if the student (or students) doesn't turn up, which wasn't uncommon in my experience. |

What a stupid remark! All countries have the misfortune to produce evil people. |

The disturbing thing about the Shipman case is that it revealed a total 'anomie' in Central England. He murdered upwards of 200 elderly people and no one noticed.
What sort of society is that ?
The same sort of society that teaches its members that it is okay to call a stranger STUPID !
I hope you enjoy the poverty of EFLing in Ukania. |

People did notice something was wrong, but it was so far from normal in our society that they couldn't conceive it could actually be true.
The poster didn't call you stupid Scot, they called the remark stupid. I won't say more than that. Only that I'm glad such a cynical negative person who I have rarely seen make a positive post on here is not in the UK, as I don't think you'd improve the situation that you are so willing to comment upon. |
