I see that many jobs require a photo. I am sure attractiveness helps, but what would potential employers in Asia like to see?
Blond hair or brown?
California tan?
Short hair or long?
What do employers hire for? |

Professionalism. Shirt and tie, tidy looking. |

I was planning on using my passport photo. Should I go to a photographer? |

Read the stickies and do a search on this forum. Most/all of your questions will be answered. Nothing new under the sun.
No one else has seen your passport photo, how are we to know? |

What do potential employers like to see?
A foreign face that looks professional. No barbecue party pics, please.
What else do they want to see? See, as in physical features? No facial piercings or tattoos would be a bonus. See, as in credentials? Well, you haven't given us anything to go on.
Universities want a minimum of a master's degree in a specialized field, plus publications, plus some fluency in Japanese, plus some experience teaching in Japan.
JET program wants someone with a BA or BS degree (any subject) and signs that he/she won't freak out with culture shock, has a basic knowledge of Japan, and perhaps some teaching experience of a sort.
Most eikaiwas also want to feel that you won't freak out with culture shock, and that you have some sort of chemistry with their students. Depending on your circumstances, a degree is usually required, but in any subject.
International schools want people with a teaching license from home, plus some teaching experience. |

a pulse. Or failing that, if they can hold a mirror under your nose and it fogs up you'll do fine.
I've only ever seen someone get rejected from an eikaiwa job based on physical looks TWICE before.
The first was a guy who walked in wearing a T-shirt, blue jeans and a ball cap, waving his resume at whoever would listen. As far as professionalism goes, this guy had about a snowball's chance in hell.
The second case was a little bit more strange. Again, coming into the office in person, he had his head shaved and sported a goatee... neither of which would have been a problem except for the fact that at the time, the company already had at least three others with shaved heads and goatees, so the manager didn't hire the fellow because he didn't want customers to start thinking they were harbouring some kind kind of bizzare cult... |

Thanks for the reply, though I had wanted just to inspire some interesting thoughts on what may prefer. I will take any advantage I can get. I am looking at present and future success. |

In our school's cosy staff room/boss's office/pantry/stationery store I actually saw a resume left lying on the table. (Cue the inevitable "you were rummaging around" posts). The resume had a photo depicting the teacher replete with Halloween garb, pointy hat, and accompanied by two small kids.
It was a brilliant idea to show that the prospective candidate adores youngsters and can wear silly clothes. It was cold, calculating and ruthless. Exactly the qualities needed to be a children's teacher. |

Funny, but did that person get the job? Also, I wonder how many resumes they sent out with that pic? |

Don't know yet. School haven't made a decision. But I know the boss loves young wholesome people who can smile a lot. If you can play the guitar, can do more fake smiles than Oscars' night in Hollywood she'll worship the ground you walk on. Maybe if you have a bible - bring it and smile beatifically at it now and again. |

I will bring the smiles, but forgot where I left the bible...a VERY long time ago. Is that a problem in general? |

I am new here so the old guard can answer you there. But from what I can tell - believing in an ancient work of fiction "The Bible" is not required here. |

This is a Buddhist / Shinto country. I'm pretty sure you can work that one out yourself. |
