Hey all this is all new to me so please excuse me if i break any sort of etiquette.

I'm a British citizen and am looking to teach in Shanghai next September. The problem I have is that I am currently outside of the UK and will be for the next 8 mths and plan to go directly to china. I've tried the emabssy in london, but they are not the most helpful people in the world!

Does anyone know if you can obtain you Z visa at a chinese embassy outside of your home country? I'm currently in Canada if that helps.

Hi there,

You might get lots of advice on the China forum if you post this there but in the meantime.....

I am also English and I got my Z Visa issued to me in Paris as I was in France living with family prior to leaving for China.

It was no problem for them to issue it but if I remember rightly they had to get loads of paperwork from my future employer before I got the visa (no idea if this is still the case). If it is still the case then you need to make sure the people in China know exactly where embassy to send the paperwork to.

Good luck!
Laura

Are you in negotation with a school? You need a formal letter of invitation before applying for a Z visa, and the school must be authorised to employ foriegn teachers.
The Z visa gets you into the country, but your school is then responsible for getting your work and resident permits processed.
Many schools -certainly in Shanghai -are quite happy for you to come in on a tourist visa. As long as they have the authority to employ you, this is no problem, and they'll arrange the details in situ.
Its the unauthorised outfits you need to watch out for, and they abound!
So for your own protection and peace of mind, the letter of invitation is the way to go.

I've applied for visas to 3rd countries whilst outside my own: it would seem to be common practice.
