I'm an older middle eastern hand who spends his time musing on calling it quits soon and retiring to Thailand.

Retirement for me means not having to work for money, working for household expenses only, not saving for the future.

I've always had a good time in Hua Hin and am looking at investing in a home there.

Is it possible to live in Thailand, retired and to work part time? How hard would it be to earn $500 - $800 a month in a place like Hua Hin? What are some of the best investments opportunities in Thailand?

can the ex-pat community there be summed up easily?

Before you come to Thailand Rolling Eyes Look at the new Visa Regulations, which are going to affect all foreigners in Thailand.

Schools alsoi won't be able to process work Visas next year, unless they up their pay from pre-1997 levels to over 40.000 Baht a Month.

Teachers and other expatriates are leaving Thailand. Others who are married are hopelessly trying to get Visas for there loved ones, many have failed.

Thailand in 2004, will become package holiday haven, without many expatriates. Try Indonesia or Vietnam, you may feel much more warmly welcomed.

If you are 50 or over you can get a retirement visa...lodge 800,000 baht in a Thai bank and you have a visa.
Then you can get work under the table so to speak...and pay no tax ...
could be plenty of work if all the English teachers are forced to leave as a result of the new visa rules!!!

How is a pay rise going to send teachers home?

A lot of the new Visa rules do not apply to teachers so the comment about earning 40,000 Baht is incorrect!
