I was in my Tekel bayı yesterday evening buying half a dozen beers
(Efes refundable bottles) to start the evening off when 2 young jandarma who are on foot patrol around here came in and were looking to buy a litre of Coca Cola. One of them went to the frıdge, not finding a one litre bottle -he pulled out a 2 litre bottle and asked the price. He put it straight back when he found that it cost 2.5 and asked where the 1 litre bottles were. I was apalled that they didn't seem able to afford a 2 litre bottle of coke and eventually when told that there were no 1 litre bottles left, they asked the price of the 2 litre bottle and 1 persuaded the other to buy it and he pulled out a battered wallet with nearly no money in it and handed over his 2.5 YTL.

Sad.

I hope you also warned them of the dangers of "cake":

Here's a couple of warnings about 'the black stuff'. Plenty more to be found on the web.

They were real drug dealers, you know.

There's a military museum outside Moscow where, for a packet of cigarettes, you can practice shooting a tank. Those young army guys there have almost NO money. It's a joke that for a bottle of vodka, they'd let you drive the tank away....or maybe not a joke.

Back to your thread...

Non commissioned soldier in the army only gets paid around 12 Y.T.L a month. So 2.5 Y.T.L is alot of money.
Exclamation

But they do get an ill-fitting uniform and as many potatoes as they care to peel.

And copies of ET's coursebook to pilot.

No, they were not doing their military service, these were jandarma.

Coca cola is allowed obviously in the barracks unlike the lojman.

You can be called up to the jandarma. By Turkish law anywhere that is not part of at least a "balde" {?} comes under military rule, no civial cops..

I know I live in an area where there are no civilian police- that is why I said they were on patrol.

It is "belde."
