Earthquakes can happen anytime and they can be quite shocking/scary/exhillerating. You're more likely to be affected if you're on the east coast, or in Taipei than say the west coast, but recent events prove that even down in the Southwest we get our fair share.
If you want detailed info about Taiwan weather or earthquakes check out the Central Weather Bureau website.

Earthquakes?

Personally, if it goes on long enough, I move hell and high water to get to my flatscreen. Don't want that beauty to fall over.
Locals advise waiting them out beside the ice-box (fridge). You figure out why. |

Earthquakes are common. I've been in plenty in Taiwan and Japan. Somewhat scary and yes, at times, exhilerating. I'm not sure earthquakes are weather though.
Typhoons are a fairly regular occurence, and for me, floods seemed to come fairly often too (partly to do with where I lived).
These are times to stock up on snacks, beer and torch batteries and watch some videos (if the power is on).
Nothing to worry about really, as long as you are not stupid about it (don't go riding your scooter in a typhoon). |

I noticed there are alot of 5.0 earthquakes mentioned on their weather website. Were there major losses such as the number of deaths, buliding damages etc?
I'm not use to this and need reassurance that I will be fine and not freak. |

Taiwan is located in one of the most seismically active areas on the globe. Minor earthquakes occur almost daily there, although many aren't big enough to feel. Earthquakes, though, are a reality you will just have to get used to if you choose to go to Taiwan. Some areas are more earthquake prone than others (central and eastern Taiwan being the more vulnerable areas), but nobody can reassure you beyond doubt that you will never experience a big quake, and its effects, no matter where you live Taiwan. If that reality scares you, it may be best you reconsider your plans to go to Taiwan. FYI, Taoyuan county is mostly situated on a major plate with relatively few faults running through it. Quakes are typically fewer in number, lower in intensity, and the area traditionally fares better than others during large temblors. |

Whether or not you are going to "fear" for your life is something you'll have to decide for yourself. It's a fact that Taiwan is situated in an area where earthquakes are relatively common (just like Japan or California). If you decide to live there, expect to feel some shakes from time to time, some big enough to make you worry a bit. In actual fact, though, quakes like the one felt in Pingdong and Gaoxiong don't occur very often. 921 strength quakes are very, very rare. I think you would be at many, many times greater risk of getting hurt in a traffic incident than by an earthquake. Still, you would be in an area where your chances of experiencing a serious quake would be signifigantly greater than in most other places in the world. Not sure what you want in the way of assurances. Earthquakes aren't fun, I hate them, but I think the probability of dying in one while in Taiwan as a teacher is very low indeed. |

Hey, it could happen. Now I am never going to go home. You've made me terrified of grizzly bears.
But really, you are as likely to get killed in an earthquake as you are of getting hit by a bus in your bedroom (in Canada that is..you are actually more likely to get hit by a bus in your bedroom in Taiwan than die in an earthquake in Canada).
Hope I 've been some help. I know moving around the world can be very scary indeed. Natural disaters lurking around every corner ready to pluck the light out of one's eyes should and must be at the top of one's Cons list.
BTW, has anyone told you about the killer roaches. They crawl in your ear while you sleep. Then when the larvae hatch, they eat your brain. |

Toe Save's unfortunate personal experience with the brain eating roaches aside, I don't think they're much of a problem.
There have been disastrous earthquakes and typhoons here on Taiwan but the large earthquakes are infrequent and you will have warnings for typhoons. Almost every area has it's killer weather specialty.
Here's a link to recent earthquakes in California and Nevada. You'll see that almost all of them are minor and felt by very few people. 300 or so earthquakes a week and you never hear about them.

Some people don't like earthquakes because there's no warning, others of us find them thrilling.
