If visiting the Thai consulate in Laos, make sure you have a background check on hand for both Thailand and your home country or else you will be sent back empty handed. Likewise, rumor has it that Penang is also requiring background checks before issuing a visa.

Good luck.

Going to be a mess for the Brits; if you've not been in the country the last three years you don't get one.

Khao San Road will have more work.

Well, your input has been much appreciated. To add to what you've mentioned, bombs have been exploded here in Bangkok. A one-way ticket out is seeming a more attractive option day by day.

OK already, enough is enough. John Karr scandal or not.

For the first time since I arrived here 3 years ago,

I am no longer recommending Thailand as a

destination for English teachers
.

Pending clarification by Thai MOE & Bureau of Immigration

as to exactly what the hell they're trying to accomplish,

this will be my last post on the Thai Forum for a while.

I'm fed up with trying to explain why people need

to jump through hoops for a third world salary

in a country with an educational system in

shambles, declining IQs among the kids,

pervasive incompetence, etc ...

Look elsewhere, folks.

It's just not worth it

and I'm through trying to defend it. Crying or Very sad

Kent: I share the sentiments of many members. Thank you for your extremely hard work and truly outstanding contributions to this forum. You deserve a lot more than kind words. I hope the staff at Dave's recognizes you in a special and very meaningful way.

I hope you will reconsider your decision after current hurdles are removed and Thailand's internal struggles are resolved.

THANK YOU!

I hear you Kent.

I've always felt that Thailand asked more of its teachers than almost anywhere else I have ever worked (the Middle East included!) and yet, paid less than almost anywhere else.

In fact, the only place I have EVER had to use a time clock (well, since 1969!), was a teaching job in Bangkok.

It's the only country I've ever been asked to do a demo lesson and found myself judged by inexperienced unqualifed teachers. Their four-week certificate outweighing my M.Ed., twelve years TEFL experience, and PGCE in TEFL.

It's the only country where I have been PAID LESS than I SAVED in every other country in which I have worked. (Geez, is that the right way to say that?).

I could add several more uh, less than pleasant experiences in the teaching world - but enough is enough.

Great place to live - sh*t place to work. Though the wage issue isn't just for teaching.

Uh oh, I guess it is poop on Thailand week.

But - I DO love my island . . . Come on down south Kent - I'll buy you a beer on the beach and we can b*tch and moan and get it out of the system - then back to work!

I have, btw, taken a job outside TEFL for the first time since 1992.

Kent you have been a wonderful help to all that come in this forum, thanks heaps. I do agree with you though, the amount of dramas you have to deal with, all just to work here, its a bit crazy.
There must be somewhere nice to live that actually apreciate people trying to help their young ones!
I've been trying to get a another business going here and I swear its getting tougher in all areas here, its always been corrupt, but the red tape here is worse than it used to be for sure.
So Ted wheres that beach? haha. A cold beer, massage and stress reducing bitch session sounds pretty bloody good haha.
Cheers all and lets hope things get better soon or there will be a mass evacuation of all foreigners!

Gypsy,

My home is about 500 meters from Bang Tao Beach - Phuket.

Bring Kent down.

Now, that sounds like a tempting proposition. These opportunities come but few times in ones lifetime.
