I've always told new teachers that there are three factors that I see as pivotal in determining how well they adjust to Ecuador.
1) Having hobbies unrelated to drinking.
2) Knowing or working hard to learn the local language.
3) Doing volunteer work, or something else that involves them in the community.
I'm not anti-drinking by any means- Especially if there's good wine or good scotch going- but if you spend most of your social time alcohol impaired, it REALLY interferes with integration.
But, Merlin:

I suspect not. BUt it would be fun to try! If you're ever in Ecuador, the first round's on me!
Best,

I won't bore you with the details but I have a chronic allergy to cigarette smoke, so I can't go to bars where I am at the moment.
It would be simple for me to go back to Italy where it is illegal to smoke in bars, but I'd like to travel a bit more first.
But if I have to stay home every night it's hardly worth it.
So, where on this planet either is it illegal to smoke in public bars etc, or, where are there a handful of decent places where you can't smoke?
I'd favour a Russian speaking country right now as that's what I'm learning.
PS Non-smoking sections are a waste of space, smoke can't read the no smoking signs.
Thanks |
In New York State it is illegal to smoke in public places, including bars (though we have one bar in Buffalo that has a special permit to function as a cigar bar). |

I agree that he was probably thinking of some non-anglophone country. |

| When I was in Italy I found that few people (especially English teachers) were interested in doing things that didn't involve drinking UNLESS it involved an overnight stay outside of town. |
Just back from the enoteca [wine bar], so perhaps I shouldn't say too much, but I did go skiing today, and I train with the local women's football side (alas not good enough to play). I'm trying to learn the local traditional tunes on my flute and whistle and I already know quite a few of the songs. I'm doing the local historical sights slowly (this is Italy after all!). As somebody who occasionally drinks too much I see no imposed dichotomy between the two behaviours.
And to reiterate other posters' comments, it's bliss going to bars here and not having to shower when you get home.... |

Yeah, come to the US, where smokers are ostracized, exiled, and ridiculed at every turn! |
