A pretty large part of finding a good job in Japan is through contacts and recommendations after you get here. I recently found a great job in this way at Nichibei. The branch is making money and has just expanded the premises to 3 times its original size with a major refit and fantastic views across the city. I have worked at 2 Nichibei branches in different cities and the Japanese staff have so far been great at both. More importantly the students percieve you as a 'teacher' rather than a foreign play-thing.

Maybe Nova is a good place to start making enquiries and meeting people and if you stumble across an opportunity while still under contract with Nova I recommend you take it immediately. Don't feel guilty about improving your situation, particularly if you work for Nova.

I've known a few nichibei teachers in Chiba, and they've all seemed happy with the school.

To which Nichibei chain (there are at least two) are you referring? The one based in Fukui (with at least two schools) is horrible. The only other one I know of, however, apparently has "issues" as well:

The Nichibei that Andy was referring to was Nichibei International Cultural School.

They have the one school and it is located in Chiba.

The Nichibei I was mentioning is called Nichiebei English Service (as stated in the thread title). It has centers in Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo. I have also worked at the British Council and so far it has been at least as good as.

Nichibei English Service (Nichibei Eigo Gakuin), according to the link I provided above, has been sued five times (three times successfully, two still pending trial) for employment violations. Its union also describes a consistent pattern of abuse extending back over ten years.

Here's the link again: http://nichibei.generalunion.org/english/

While I agree with you the British Council is also a pretty cr*ppy place to work, I think even they would be insulted by your comparison. Wink

I have worked there.
It is ok. I met some nice people.
But as a teacher, as a main job the pay isn`t good. That is the real downside.
My wife worked for Nichibei for about nine years, but wanted to make more money so now she teaches at a couple of universities.
Nichibei students are far better than the university students she has.

The above seems a much more likely description than the OP's...especially given the five lawsuits and other issues people have had (and continue to have) with this school. E.g., I'm sure it's decent enough for a large eikaiwa chain, but comparing it favorably to the British Council? Shocked Laughing How many ongoing lawsuits does the latter have? Wink

The last question was meant to be rhetorical. Lawsuits against the British Council for labor code violations? I've never heard of any. Have you?

Okay, my mistake. I thought there was something ambiguous in the "but comparing it favorably to the British Council?" part. As in: "this food tastes almost as good as turd!" (not a good thing to compare anything favourably to).

Nevermind...

Oh, I get it. That'll teach me for trying to be "ironical." Wink

Just in case others missed my attempts at humor, I really don't think the BC is "cr*ppy" (nor does the OP apparently...). Also, given that the link I provided has "Nichibei English Service" written in a large font at the top, I kind of figured it was the same place as the OP's. Indeed, I'm just wondering now how someone could "have worked at 2 Nichibei branches in different cities" and yet remained blissfully unaware that at least a few colleagues have had serious, ongoing differences with that "great" Japanese staff...?
