What do you expect for the most expensive city in the world? And if you are getting your fix at coffee shops than you can afford it.

Tokyo hasn't been at the top of those "most expensive city" lists for quite some time. Scandinavian cities are usually the top two and I think Tokyo may not even be in the top 3 any more.

I agree. This notion that Tokyo is hyper-expensive is an utter myth, obviously espoused by people who haven't recently tried to book hotel rooms and nice restauraunts in Paris, London, or New York, or Stockholm.

However, the one thing overpriced in Tokyo (and the rest of Japan): coffee. At least in New York I can get a great cup almost anywhere for under 2 bucks, plus a great bagel. And in Paris, I can also get a superb cup plus a real croissant for relatively cheap, and in London, my relatively cheap cup of jo will come with toast and jam that isn't gonna set me back 7 dollars.

Tokyo isn't hyper expensive and then you go and complain about the hyper-expensive price of toast, jam and coffee here? LOL

Ah yes, the resident wise guy surfaces again to add nothing. What would a thread be without his one-offs? LOL. OK, canuck, let me amend: Tokyo is relatively cheap, save for the coffee and baked goods sold at cafes. How's that? Meet with your ever-scrutinizing approval? Rolling Eyes

Dellusions dellusions dellusions . . . obviously from a Dave's lifer who takes his role here way way too seriously, to the point where he can now, in his own dellusional imagination, devise conspiracies on a dime! Sheesh... Rolling Eyes ... back to your Key Coffee corner, please.

Yes, sugar frosted tin flavoured "coffee"風 beverage. Disturbing, but depending on caffeine levels - entirely drinkable.

Haha! I have to admit, I use this form of "coffee" at times, but strictly as way to get my caffeine if all other options are non-existent. I'm surprised I haven't heard more from Japanese or foreigners about the environmental waste associated with canned coffee. The ratio of tin to actual coffee is about 50/50. I just love the exotic names they give this chemical coffee. My favourite is Emerald Mountain European Blend. Laughing

waitaminnit - these are 2 different names rolled into one: 1.) Emerald Mountain and 2.) European. I gotta say though that Roots has the best can designs and some of the best coffee names. As far as taste goes, it's all the same in the dark. Oh wait, that's something else, isn't it? Razz

the no-sugar canned coffee is....well...still disgusting, but at least not sugary.

What about:

The Roots' Boss' Emerald Mountain European Rainbow Morning Shot Jack Blend Caramel White Chocolate Latte?

My personal favourite!

The "new packaging" trick on the canned coffee gets me several times a year. A new one comes out, and I think "Maybe this one will taste okay" and every time I am disappointed.

At my local French bread shop the morning set is a really nice cappuccino, latte, or espresso with a pastry for 300 yen. Tokyo doesn't have to be expensive, you just have to go to the right places.
