Can anyone explain the term "proper visa required" to me? I see it a lot in job ads. Does it mean that the employer will not sponsor you for a work visa?

It means that the employer is not willing to sponsor you for a work visa. So, what are you left with?
You start working for him with enough time left on a previous visa. This visa must be a type that permits you to do the work that this employer wants. In other words, an engineer visa cannot be used for teaching.
You have a spouse visa, working holiday visa, or PR status.
You have a dependent visa, cultural visa, or student visa plus the permission granted to work (needed for all 3 of these). |

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm surprised by the amount of people not willing to sponsor you for a full-time job. I suppose it's extra hassle for the employer, fair enough. |

Technically there is no "visa sponsorship" required. Most employers are just as clueless as most of their potential employees.
Most non-JET ALTs are working without the "proper visa". They have Specialist in Humanities/International Services Status of Residence rather than the required Instructor Status of Residence. |

Please explain more, or point me to somewhere where this is explained fully?
I perhaps naively assumed a company would need to sponsor you for a specified length of time, they'd send your passport to some central processing place, and then it would come back with 'work visa' stamped in pretty Japanese writing. |

If by this, you mean that nobody is actually forced to sponsor a visa, you are right. If you mean something else, what did you mean?
It doesn't matter about non-JET ALT visa status. Nobody is checking on them. I don't know where you get the idea that an Instructor visa is required for such positions, anyway. People can work as non-JET ALTs with other types of visas, too. Spouse visa, for example. Perfectly legal, and there are lots of them around.
kit,
There really is no "hassle" involved in sponsoring a visa. Employers simply have to provide proof that they are a real company with a certain number of employees, tax records, and contracts, etc. Everyone has their own reasons for sponsoring or not sponsoring. |

There is some hassle and responsibility involved though. Often, the employer needs to take some time to help the employee with immigration etc. due to language difficulties. In addition, sponsoring an employee makes the company responsible for things the employee does, to a point. It isn't just a no risk thing to sponsor someone.
"Proper visa required" means the employer is looking for someone with a valid visa before applying for a job, so that the employee can start working immediately, rather than waiting for the visa application process to finish. |
