Ok, let me see if i got this right. I just need a simple yes or no.
You must have the following to teach legally:
1.) a two year degree with a tefl certificate
2.) a 4 year degree (in my case as I'm from the US)
and...
Having a tefl/celta certificate doesn't really help increase my wage, correct? |

Sorry, but it's impossible for a simple yes or no answer. The only thing for sure is a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Everything else is constantly open to interpretation, and has beed discussed to death for ages without any definitive answers. For every person that gets a work permit there is another who doesn't. Maybe it depends on the mood of the person processing the paperwork. |

I'll echo Dangerous Apple's comments. Here's a quick summary:
1) A Bachelor's Degree from a 4 year University is definitely fine (3 year equivalent from the UK, etc.)
2) A College Diploma (typically 2 years) PLUS a TEFL/CELTA/TESOL is USUALLY fine if the Taiwanese government recognizes your College. Checking first through a good agency or school is definitely the best way to be certain.
3) Lack of any kind of degree or diploma makes teaching in Taiwan fully illegal
South Africans, in particular, should be careful to make sure their school is recognized by the Taiwanese government.
Hope that helps. |

contact your local TECO office to find out if they recognize it, or better yet ask prospective employers to find out for you |

John,
It's impossible to tell without knowing the name of your school... also, the intensity of your TEFL course can sometimes make an impact.
The best way to find a definite answer is to make sure you come to Taiwan through a reputable Company. This way you can make sure you are legal before you arrive.
Hope that helps! |
