Two and half years in the Seoul area, I'd like to chime in here.

-A good starting salary in Korea for an experienced teach would be between 2.1-2.5 million won. It depends on the workplace, hours, and experience obviously. On a salary of 2 million you can live very very comfortably in Korea and still bank a million a month (a grand US). Your apartment will be taken care of, as well as your airfare.

-Not too many hours of privates can increase your takehome big time. Privates are illegal but no one really cares. As long as you're on the downlow, you're fine.

-Korea is very safe. I can honestly say I've never had a moment in this country in which I didn't feel safe.

-Race riots? WTF! People have always been polite, kind, and respectful towards me. However, I've always been polite and respectful too. The occasional super drunk old man might mumble something bad (I've heard this happens in Japan too) or something.

-For you wife, she'll be fine. I know a teacher who is here with his Philippino wife and she's been having a great time.
-She won't get molested on the train (unlike that other country) but she should be cautious if taking a taxi late night/early morning.

I've never heard of anyone being robbed.

Kitchen really depends on the place. apartment kitchens are good, officetel kitchens suck, villa kitchen are decent. You just have to talk with your school beforehand. I know several people with spouses that are provided with larger housing because of it.

I know several people in the sEoul area that are into mountain biking and there is a scene developing.

Korea's internet is the fastest in the world. Can you say dvd quality movies in under 10 minutes!!!

There are some areas that have surf but Japan gets way more waves than Korea does. Some areas off of Busan, Goje Island, and Jeju.

Drugs are everywhere, however, drug use isn't rampant among foreign teachers in Korea.

You know...you should really be on the Korean forum and japan forum asking question.
