New Zealanders say hey a lot in a similar way that Canadians supposedly say eh and I picked that up from living there. I say eh, hey, or whatever seems appropriate. I think it came from women waiting for their husbands, who are busy drinking beer and watching hockey, to answer. Laughing Razz

forgot about the taxes...duh

More reasons - tired of low representation from the Western provinces, tired of waiting for Quebec to seperate, lack of jobs in smaller centres - tired of being forced to live in the city to make money and then spend it all due to high cost of living. Sick of Starbucks culture and consumerism in Vancouver (although that could be true of Americans as well).

there was an article on CBC today about the min wage going up...anyone think this will happen??

the only problem with living away from Canada is the lack of hockey...sigh - btw love the avatar Canuck!!! Razz

the cost of living going up faster than the pay rates? Or is that just Vancover?

Don't think the Canadians have cornered the market on this. So many Americans I meet overseas apologize for their gov't and we all know Americans are not very apt to apologize for anything. Laughing

Yes, when are they going to offer hockey games live on the internet. I can only listen to them live, better than nothing.

Ok went there and looked throught the channels but where's the hockey??

Actually now that football is over we get one game on Sundays now on one of the American channels. Unfortunately it's from Colorado so it's always their games and not my team but still it's hockey on TV!!

We listen as well but it keeps cutting out to buffer, damn that's annoying.

Teaching in Montreal isn't too bad. I've been doing it for the past decade. Believe it or not, I am able to raise a family on my teaching salary which is about $20 an hour. It's true that my wife has to work too for us to survive, but isn't that true for most families? We were even able to buy a pretty expensive house. It should be noted, however, that Montreal is much cheaper than Toronto and Vancouver.

Good one Fuzzx Laughing I didn't want to say it... Shocked

That TVU doesn't have hockey anymore, I checked out the forums and it looks like they had it until Dec or Jan and then the person that was broadcasting it got a cease and desist order from the NHL. Big suprise there. Stupid NHL Mad

For Canadians out there, you can WHL online but you have to pay (figures), it's better hockey a lot of the time though.

Watching Rick Mercer this morning reminded me of why we aren't in Canada anymore... Laughing knee in my package, knee in my package...

Nobody has mentioned escaping Canadian winters!

...and in Costa Rica, they think that 5 degrees Celsius is cold! Ha!

Definitely escaping cold winters!

I am a certified teacher here in Ontario, Canada. The reason I prefer to teach abroad is because of many variables. Specifically, there are not many jobs here for teachers. I am talking in the public school area. There are not many full time jobs for teaching ESL either. The pay I get in Korea is equal to a first year teachers salary. I also don't have to pay for my apartment.

There are more jobs in the Toronto surrounding area, and up north in Alberta, but not too many jobs. The competition is strong, and some of the substitute teaching lists are full, and they are now capping them.

Once you get a job, then there are ton of other problems with the school system. I have friends teaching in Toronto full-time, and they say that there is no support at all for first year teachers. The schools are underfunded, and she said she is so burnt out. The kids have no respect/discipline towards the teacher and teacher has no support.

Not all schools are like that, but that is a situation in most schools. There is a high burnout for teachers. I love to teach, but going to teach in another country, has a different set of challenges.

Being able to travel, and experience another culture, makes you more experienced, and a more well rounded individual.

We never tried teaching in Canada because you need a degree...

We didn't really have to escape cold winters as we were in Vancouver and the winter here is almost worse because when it's 5 degrees out, it's not that much warmer in our house. We have a little heater but still...

we have to get somewhere warmer

so anyone found hockey yet?? we are lucky enough to get one game on Sundays now because football is over and we have a channel from Denver but it's all Colorado games of course...and we hate them...for obvious reasons. So we have to wait til Vancouver plays the Avs on a Sunday to see our team...sigh...we still have the radio though.
